Interviews: Six important forces that will shape 2009 - Trends in the Living Networks - 0 views

  •
Great reading about the trends to watch.
  •
This is a great read -- I particularly think that Constant Partial Attention (CPA) is something that we should be aware of in our classrooms. Excellent article.

Also I find it interesting how he shares that some kids who have gotten constant positive reinforcement in schools are going to have a tough time w/ competition. Competition is part of life.

2008 awards were so suprising to me. Thank you to those who voted for Cool Cat Teacher for best teacher blog and the Flat Classroom project 2008 for best educational wiki. Thank you so much! So many great award winners here AND great people who were finalists also. There are many new gems among the finalists and I hope you'll take time to look there as well.

Digiteen Dream Team: New Protest - 0 views

  •
With class ending this week, my students want to once more go into Lively to express how they feel about this great service. They love it, although we are moving ahead to explore other options (which we'll announce in January) -- so, they want to have a virtual funeral for Lively which will happen this Thursday. Just check their blog and read this post from the students about what they are planning.

Again, this is a student driven project - they are currently reflecting on this process and will be sharing their thoughts about whether the protest was worth it and what they have learned. Stay tuned, the Digiteen Dream Team is a great student blog that will continue!

Lively - Livewire Society - 0 views

Students in the phillipines have made a wiki in support of Lively. They are sharing their avatars and the rooms that they have made along with screenshots of their rooms and avatars. This is a wonderful thing to see that other kids are using this website.

Kids love virtual worlds and there are great applications. Google is making a mistake. I WISH WISH they would listen to these students who see great potential.

Holocaust Art and Instructional Resources - Maine Holocaust Education Network - 0 views

    This request from Ernie Easter:

    "Hi Vicki -

Margaret Lincoln, a librarian from Battle Creek, Michigan and a member of the Maine Holocaust Education Network Ning has posted a request for educators who use art in teaching about the Holocaust to submit curriculum ideas. The artist is a Holocaust survivor. Would you be willing to look at it and add it to your blog? The only thing I am unsure about at this point is the commercial aspect of it, if any."

Six Apart - Pownce - 0 views

  •
GOt this letter from Pownce today:

"We are sad to announce that Pownce is shutting down on December 15,
2008. As of today, Pownce will no longer be accepting new users or new
    pro accounts.

To help with your transition, we have built an export tool so you can
save your content. You can find the export tool at Settings > Export.
Please export your content by December 15, 2008, as the site will not
    be accessible after this date."

I predict that 2009 will be the year many Web 2.0 apps were "left behind." Export that data -- bye bye lots of stuff.

Education Report on Houston TV station about flat classroom - 0 views

  •
A video about the students in Texas and their struggle to raise money to come to the Flat Classroom conference - this is a great piece and captures so much of the essence of what makes this project so special - it is so much bigger than any of us and a HUGE undertaking for any teacher - but is so worth it.

I find it so interesting that so many schools don't have "room" in their curriculum for these experiences.

It is called "mathetude" - however, this digg-like aggregator for technology and education is fascinating with readers giving "apples" to the news stories. I've enjoyed browsing through what they have in this repository of current news.

In Florida, virtual school could make classrooms history - 1 views

  • A new law that takes effect next fall requires every district in the state to set up an online school for kindergarten through eighth-grade students. They won't have to get on the bus -- or even get out of their PJs -- to head to school at the family computer.
  •
Florida takes a huge step forward (or backwards?) in virtual ed.
  •
A new law requires every district to set up an online school for grades K-8th grade. I'm just curious about a few things -- why the arbitrary selection of ages? I'm not sure that virtual education is a good idea for k, 1, 2 -- would need to be convinced. To me, it has great application for high school -- but yet high school isn't part of it.

Many virtual classes I've seen are NOT well constructed and the online teachers aren't accessible. The teacher must be there while teachers are learning. Just have a lot of ideas here but questions too!

District Business - 0 views

  • the possible recording of incoming calls, a serious problem with the district's grade reporting software, and a breach of a computer containing confidential student information that was not reported to the state.
  •
Whistleblower lawsuit from an IT director.
  •
Some push back in IT is happening such as this case with an IT director who said he was fired for "blowing the whistle" on innappropriate IT behavior such as problems with the grade reporting software and a computer with confidential student information that was breached without reporting it to the state.

These sorts of things have both sides. The point that I would take here is to listen to IT directors when they have concerns: just because you don't understand the problem doesn't mean there is a problem, and that ethics must be applied when things are dealt with in IT.

Discovery Educator Network - 0 views

    STAR educators program.
  •
If your school has united streaming and you do things to teach others about how to use this resource, you can become a STAR educator. Here is the application process and let me know, I'll be happy to help you.

I have an ulterior motive on this one -- if I help recruit a STAR by December 1st, I can get a mythbusters or Deadliest catch DVD and really would love to give this to my son. Like all of you, I'm scrambling this year on Christmas to slash the budget and still do great things. (Hey, some of you might want to give my book for Christmas ;-)

So, if you decide to join and want a little help, let me know. And if you do so, let me know and I can get credit and get a DVD -- my son LOVES mythbusters!!

I've been a STAR educator for some time now, and it is another great networking program. They also have their summer institutes. They have a wealth of great resources and UNITED STREAMING is my teacher's FAVORITE classroom subscription that we have.

Great sessions from Discovery - one is coming up on October 22nd about Bernie Dodge.
  •
Discovery education has the greatest WEbinars. I'm going to attend the one next Wednesday with Bernie Dodge. These are free great sessions. I highly recommend listening to the one with Bernie Dodge - he is doing some great work and came on wow2 last year and talked about webquests and web 2.0 and was getting ready to embark on some really cool work. I"ve GOT to hear what he has to say. This is great for teachers and anyone teaching educators.

Northern Colorado Business Report - Business News Focused on Northern Colorado - 0 views

  •
    This announcement came in recently:

"The University of Northern Colorado is about to launch the Education Innovation Institute.

University and government officials will detail plans on Sept. 24 for what is being billed as the "leading authority on education policy research and analysis." UNC has been a leader in the field of education since its founding in 1889 as the State Normal School."

I hope that they will blog it, for if they truly want to influence educational innovation, they will share their findings and become part of this amazing grassroots network of educators. Be part of change or be irrelevant.
