"Posted at 04:30 PM ET, 10/14/2011 STEVE JOBS SMACKDOWN: Matt Bors delivers our Cartoon of the Day By Michael Cavna [comic] Last Sunday night, Comic Riffs first reported on a curious trend we noticed among editorial artists: Despite Steve Jobs's declared Buddhism, obituary cartoons were rendering unto him an afterlife at the gates of an iPad-happy St. Peter. Throughout the week, other cartoonists noted the odd trend, as well. But one artist - Portland's Matt Bors - has now rendered perhaps the most inspired response. ..."

From Steve Wheeler's blog -"I was quite impressed by Joyce Seitzinger's Professional Learning Environment (PLN) model that she presented at Deakin University in Melbourne this week. " some great thoughts to ponder here although I agree with Steve that this model looks like a first draft to me.

10 Powerful Quotes From The Steve Jobs Movie And What They Teach Us About Leadership - ... - 2 views

  •
"Steve Jobs didn't hesitate to take risks. If he wanted something, he would ask, even at a young age. When Jobs was twelve years old he called up HP co-founder Bill Hewlett and asked for spare parts. Hewlett gave Jobs the parts and a summer job. "You've got to be willing to crash and burn. If you're afraid of failing, you won't get very far," Jobs once said. "Most people never pick up the phone and call. Most people never ask, and that's what separates the people who do things from the people who just dream about them." I've rarely interviewed a successful entrepreneur or CEO who hasn't risked failure. In fact most successful people don't even see 'failure;' they see a result that didn't have the intended outcome."

Lots of conversation about why Steve Jobs wasn't named the Time Person of the year. This would be a fascinating discussion for a social studies or current events class. Who would you name as the person of the year and why.

Colorful Convection Currents at Steve Spangler Science - 3 views

  •
I know Steve Spangler sells a lot of science things on his website, but I just enjoy him. I like how he explains things and how he uses colorful, attractive things in his science experiments. If you're a science teacher, I think you'll enjoy browsing the experiments on his website. Here is one on convection currents. He shares how to do all of the experiments, so you don't have to buy anything from him. This is a great example of how you can be helpful and people want to buy from you.

Wissahickon School District: WHS Graduation Project - 5 views

  •
I'll be spending time to AJ Juliani, Steve Mogg and Rosie Esposito from Wissahikon school district. Here's a copy of their Graduation project required to graduate from their school. I think all schools should have graduation projects. There is information and manuals if you want to look into this for yourself. I saw this in Evansvlle High school as well. This can be part of your genius work. "As part of graduation from Wissahickon High School, every senior is required to complete a graduation project.  The projects include research, writing and an oral presentation to assure that students are able to apply, analyze, synthesize and evaluation information and communicate significant knowledge and understanding.  This is culminating project in one or more areas of concentrated study under the guidance and direction of the high school faculty. Learning with 'e's: A convenient untruth - 19 views

  •
Some days I'm a visual learner, some days I'm kinaesthetic, other days I like to listen and soak it all up.... The styles exist - that's true; they're not mutually exclusive as one of the previous commentators said; they lead to 3-dimensional learning though - the important point is, I believe, that we need to balance the approaches we take when teaching a class. Mix it up, challenge, don't do the same old, same old. The impact of VAK approaches - the anecdotes you refer to, Steve - probably owes its success to giving learners a variety and the recognition that there is more than one way to skin a cat i.e. we don't need to teach things the way they always were taught.

Professor tries improving lectures by removing them from class | Inside Higher Ed - 7 views

This case study in Inside Higher Ed about Professor Mike Garver (Central Michigan University - Marketing) shows how this professor is giving lectures by no longer giving lectures. Interestingly, he talks about how Bloom's Taxonomy impacted his change in style. This article ALSO includes a video and I totally applaud the journal of higher ed for including a video. There are so many articles talking about a "great teacher" doing this or "great professor" doing that - SHOW ME. This article did just that. Applause to Inside higher ed and Steve Kolowich - give us more articles like this. If you're in higher ed or a teacher in high school - this is a great read. "It's a good way to, in his words, 'Put a movie in your mind,'

Future of Education - Charting the Course of Education and Learning in a Networked World - 0 views

  •
From Steve Hargadon: "I've started a new community at http://www.FutureofEducation.com to providing an opportunity for those who care about education to share their voices and ideas on charting the course of education in a networked world. It's a place for thoughtful discussion on an incredibly important topic. The site will launch officially at the end of the month with the start of a weekly interview series, but I'm inviting some participation now because of an email Carol Broos (http://www.classroom20.com/profile/beatechie) sent out. Carol is one of twelve teachers who have been invited to participate in a round table discussion concerning the direction of education the new Secretary of Education Arne Duncan on Jan 21. She was sent the following questions, and is asking for feedback and ideas. You can respond either at the new http://www.FutureofEducation.com site or her wiki at http://education20.pbwiki.com/FrontPage. Here are the questions: 1. What is the one most important education issue you wish Secretary Duncan to focus on during his tenure and why? 2. How shall the tenets of the No Child Left Behind act be altered or invigorated? What are its positives? How can its negatives be improved? 3. How should the new administration respond to the nation's need for better prepared and more qualified teachers? 4.What should the new administration do to increase student engagement in mathematics, the sciences and the arts? 5. How should funding equity issues be addressed? There is also a discussion topic on what questions were not asked that might have been." This seems to be a great thing!
