Like everything else on the Internet, trying to find images is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Without the right tools for finding science and math images on the web it is often an impossible, or at least mind-numbing, task. What is needed are search engines which make the job easier. This is where the tips and tricks provided below help this seemingly impossible task by using the top search Web 2.0 search engines and tools available today. These are valuable resources for both you and your students when trying to find just the right image for lesson or project involving digital media.

Another search engine that will go through Flickr for creative commons images. You can search by tags (not description). I like the way it specifically lists the creative commons license type the person has given the image.

Searches other search engines for pictures (Flickr, Photobucket, Google, Yahoo etc). Windows-only but the Mac version is under development. Some images have copyright info on them, but not all. Can see a lot of different images at once.

Thinklink has made some upgrades for teachers. There is an improved student sign up, the ability to organize students by class. You can create image "channels" and interactive albums and you can have a more safe way to find images and use them. I recorded a session on my podcast this week about UDL and Beth Ritter-Guth highly recommends Thinglink to use with students.

Free-OCR.com is a free online OCR (Optical Character Recognition) tool. You can use this to perform OCR on any image you supply. This service is free, no registration necessary. We also do not need your email address. Just upload your image files. Free-OCR takes either PDF, JPG, GIF, TIFF or BMP format. The only restriction is that the images must not be larger than 2MB, no wider or higher than 5000 pixels and there is a limit of 10 image uploads per hour.

So, someone gives you a massive document and can't find it to email it to you and you have to retype whole pieces. This free OCR (optical character recognition) is a great tool to try to keep from having to do all that typing. I wish Evernote added OCR export but as of yet, does not. (just for searching)

When looking for graphics like for Classroom Rules, I like to do image searches on Google because you can usually find some very brief summaries. Here are some short ideas for those of you working on your wall posters now. Simple is better.
