One of our readings discussed a 2008 graduate online course in educational technology (EC&I 831) that was one of the first to translate connectivist principles into practice. Shortly thereafter, the leaders of connectivism, Siemens and Downes, moderated a similar class (CCK08) as a MOOC with thousands of participants. This article documents both the successes and struggles associated with the CCK08 MOOC.

This article separates technology used in communities of practice based upon the technology's function. Some technology supports content (blogs, vlogs, microblogs, status updates, wikis, collaborative document authoring tools, social bookmarking, media libraries and albums. Project coordination is aided by use of event calendars, task management tools to track project deadlines, and decision support tools. Incentive and recognition technology allows members to be recognized by way of badges and endorsements. Other technology supports member interaction. Profiles and social networking like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and Instagram, member commenting, discussion boards, and webinar services allow for member interaction on their own time frames.

While not based on technology, the article by Mark Granovetter published in 1973 looks at social networks where diffusion of information is not based on strong ties but rather weak ties. The paper suggests that information is diffused further through the strength of a person's weak ties. We may see this also through social media.

This article focused on the theory and gives good if not great detail on the reasonings for the theory of connectivism. It stresses the importance of the individual driving the learning, the digital ages importance, and the idea of interaction for learning.

A. McAuley, B. Stewart, G. Siemens and D. Cormier are the authors of a report on MOOCs and the Digital Economy. Besides the print report, there are four videos of different segment of the report.

As a teacher of future teachers, I found this case study an interesting and helpful read. Good focus on sharing and collaboration among teachers as a means of developing self-efficacy. The researcher interviewed four teachers to develop an understanding of the way view their role as teacher, and how their interactions with colleagues impact these views.

This article explores personal learning environments in detail. It first explains the theory of cognitivism and its limitations and then goes into learning networks as an alternative to this theory. When describing learning networks it first details what a network is and then tells of some of the characteristics which are good for learning and limitations of learning networks. Characteristics included learning resting in a diversity of opinions, learning as a collection of specialized nodes, and decision-making in itself being a learning process.

This article talks about how learning environments can be designed in various ways. It all depends on how the preferences of the learner and how structured of an environment they desire.

David Weinberger ("Cluetrain Manifesto") was one of the recommended authors for further reading on Communities of Practice. The central premise of this book is that the digital era fundamentally changed how we store and reference information. In a physical storage based world, an book or article can only be filed in a single way. Digital materials can be filed in unlimited ways and thus enable a greater degree of connections to be made. The next generation of web search technology "semantic search" will tap into this.
