December 17th, 2012 by Claire The Internet is a bountiful place, full of information, wonder, and an endless supply of heart-melting puppy videos. But what may sometimes seem in short supply are fantastic, free photos to easily-and legally-use for your presentations or blog slideshows.

This article provides insight into personal learning environments by answering seven basic questions about them. A scenario in which an avid car enthusiast uses a PLE to help him gather knowledge to restore a car provides a helpful image as an introduction. Additionally, an overview of PLEs is provided, along with some examples of institutions that encourage their use and how they are used. Web 2.0 allowed the evolution of the PLE into a digital world. One drawback mentioned by the article is that students who have never practiced metacognition in their own learning practices are said to have difficulty at times with the format of PLEs.

This is a Pinterest source used for PLNs that offers numerous resources for educators and personal learning networks.

I have yet to get into Pinterest, feel it might be a black hole for me. These are some great PLN pins. The images alone give you a good idea of ways you can build your PLE.

Click on each building to learn more about places in the community: Post Office, Fire Station, Police Station, Hospital, School, Library. For each, there is a linked page with a cartoon image (Ben Franklin dressed up as each worker), a description, and some include a link for more information.

Click on the workers to learn more about their jobs: Veterinarian, Librarian, Pizza Maker, Utility Worker, Mayor, Police Officer, Firefighter, Pediatrician. For each, a series of pages includes text and images. Students can click on speaker icons to hear page text read aloud. Optional "test" questions can be answered at the end of each workers' section.

This is a great website for all types of thematic units. There are full-length movies, movie clips, images, and lessons. This is a subscription service.

A great resource for students and teachers to find free images to use in their presentations and work. These images are high-quality.

I tried using Popplet with my students. It was easy to figure out, but too many students experienced glitches. While Popplet's beta version is free, my school chose to subscribe to Webspiration for greater stability.

Solid graphic and one that actually focuses on teachers. A lot of the resources I found used businesses or government bodies as examples, but this is obviously more pertinent. Nice find.

I stumbled across the video that a former student created that shows the differences of CoPs, Connectivism, and PLEs. What is cool is that the author uses only pictures, music, and written text to define them - no dialogue.

I watched this because it was made by a former student. It was nice because it was different - the no words was a nice touch. I wasn't really a fan of all the images and I think they only made sense because I am watching this last. If I watched this first, I am not sure I would be much wiser. Not a criticism of the video per se, just didn't do a lot to further my rather limited knowledge. Sorry Matt! ;-)

I watched the video and now need to go improve my presentation. The student did a great job of finding images that exemplified the topic. Even knowing this was for module 2, I kept waiting for words, not because I didn't get the message but I think people (teachers and students alike) are just so used to having words to rely on.

Voicethread is a great way for students to add narration to their presentation slides. Simply upload graphics and images to the slides then record narration over it. Great for presentations you wish to share with others and students can receive feedback from the Voicethread community.

Instagram is a social media service that lets users share photos and videos. This app can be used as a way for students to share ideas and work with each other through the use of hashtags. Students can also share their images with the Instagram community and receive additional feedback. This app also doubles as a video and image editing software.
