Padlet is a digital board that can be used for for professional development for teachers or with students. The teacher creates an account, then creates a digital bulletin board that only requires web access via a link. Links can be emailed or posted in Google Classroom. Students can post using the link without signing in, which makes it easy to use. This tool can be used for brainstorming, formative assessment, collaboration, or an exit ticket.

I have used this in my composition classes to work on constructing thesis statements and to view the resources the students are working on.

Padlet is an online virtual "bulletin" board, where students and teachers can collaborate, reflect, share links and pictures, in a secure location. Padlet allows users to create a hidden wall with a custom URL. Padlet creators can also moderate posts, remove posts, and manage their board 24/7.

This is San Diego State University's facebook page, which effectively uses, through a bill board style, links to all major parts of campus. This is similar to the links you would find on a webpage for the school with the added benefit of seeing current student activity in bulletin boards, and finding services with relative ease.

This site provides ideas on different technologies that can be integrated into the classroom. I like how it also address adminstrators, as all school personel should be on board with supporting technology integration.

This is a great resource for those trying to integrate more technology into their classrooms. When everyone is not on board with technology integration then it makes it hard on those one or two trying to integrate it.

Research regarding the benefits of being a member of a community of practice. While the information seems a bit forced (the communities of practice used for the study were exclusively face-to-face communities), the benefits of being a member of a community of practice still seem valid. According to the study, they are (1) autonomy and freedom to think beyond, (2) sources to ideas, (3) sounding board, (4) intellectual discussion, (5) like-mindedness, (6) alternative perspective and cross-pollination of ideas, (7) overcoming intellectual isolation, (8) move towards collaborative research, (9) response to research pressure, (10) synergy and leverage, (11) time and energy saving, (12) an informal ground for learning and training, (13) fostering of tangible returns, (14) driving research, (15) opportunities to met, (16) networking, information sharing and updates, (17) support and guidance, (18) sense of belonging, (19) identity, and (20) intrinsic fulfillment. As the article is about higher education, there are certainly some benefits that are more specific to their context, but I think the findings of the article are still valid.

This middle school showcases how to use Pinterest for learning. It has 40+ boards such as "Summer Reading Lists," Walls of Wisdom," "Eat SMART"," "Brainiacs!" and "Teaching and Learning." Students and teachers can learn something from this collection.

This is a great resource for Software Support Tools for Assessment and Grading. This was put together my NEWA the organization that developed the MAPS test. Some of these I wouldn't have thought of for Assessment, like Lino. Lino is an old-time virtual bulletin board where you post "sticky" notes. I've seen this used as a "parking lot" for questions during PD, but I think I'll try it for assessment with teachers next training I lead.

I tried using Popplet with my students. It was easy to figure out, but too many students experienced glitches. While Popplet's beta version is free, my school chose to subscribe to Webspiration for greater stability.

A visual idea board that multiple users can collaborate on adding text, images, maps, videos, and more. Extremely user friendly too. 

"The Louisiana Bicentennial Commission asked students to design a promotional plan for a Louisiana tourist attraction and use emerging technologies and social media to promote it. They could not use traditional forms of advertising." While your class may not have the backing of the Tourism Board for your city/county/state or even a statewide competition, it doesn't mean you cannot give the same assignment to your class with the same general guidelines.

Make free avatars or banners like those on the left. You can use your avatar on message boards, forums, and social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, Digg, etc. Fetch an image from Google automatically with the provided tool or upload your own image.

This blog by Tom Spiglanin discusses what a Personal Learning Network is and how his was constructed. He discusses specific characteristics that he believes makes his PLN valuable and describes it as a hardware store, rather than a tool in his toolbox.

When I designed my creative expression on PLNs, I thought of keywords that were consistent in my research such as share, network, connections, etc. In this article, I found it interesting that the author described his experience as "on-fire learning." I found other keywords and phrases in this article that I can add to my list, such as global sounding board, camaraderie and support. When reflecting on this topic, it makes me realize what strength PLNs provide individuals and groups.

This discusses the importance of connected learning and all the ways one uses a PLN. It also talks about how the definition of a PLN has changed over time and how many of the original ideas are now obsolete but that the idea behind it all is still that it is about being connected and learning from others, and also helping others learn.

Set up quiz games that students can play using clickers or by texting their answer from a cell phone

This is an example of an instructional game type of software. This is a fun and entertaining educational game that students can play on their mobile device or tablet. Teachers can search for pre-made Kahoot games (in math) or make their own. Students are engaged and points add up to show a leader board and the score of each student to introduce some competition.

Kahoot! is a free game-based learning platform that makes it fun to learn - any subject, in any language, on any device, for all ages!

This Pinterest page is more of a menu of materials associated with Personal Learning Networks.  Numerous links to PLN resources are provided.

Pinterest is awesome, except for the fact that it is a total time sucker. At least I get some good ideas for my classroom and recipes for dinner from it. I also posted this link because it had quite a few websites that talked about PLN's. I'm new to PLN's but I am certainly learning a lot more about them this week.

I wondered if anyone would find something on Pinterest. One of the articles that I read mentions the idea of framing, or putting a personal interpretation on someone else's material. Pinterest is a classic example of this. Without framing, though, I don't think we would all see the value in what others pin.

The authors conducted a study of two groups of students (ages 13-17) with two mentors in a teacher education program at Brigham Young University. The study examined how interaction within the two study groups contributed to social construction of shared knowledge. Group A had social interactions previous to the six-week online project, while group B had no previous social interactions. The researchers examined a variety of data including email exchanges, chat room transcripts, electronic logs, and discussion board entries. The conclusions suggested the effectiveness of an online mentor whose role helps establish social interaction, a supportive climate for the exploration of ideas, consensual decision-making, and open discussion. The strength of the study involves using two groups for comparison, as well as a variety of authentic data resources. Limitations include whether results can be generalized and limited ability to analyze students' prior social interactions as factors in the results.

In this article that focuses on social networking and learning, Ruth Reynard explores research conducted by The National School Boards Association (USA), in partnership with research firm Grunwald Associates and with the support of Microsoft, Newscorp, and Verizon, published a 2007. The research cited indicates that learning through social networks is mostly "unidirectional (posting messages, downloading media files, updating personal information) and students utilize it as "a self-reflective learning environment." However, the author points out that the researchers also found if instructional design is geared toward "the user controlling the tool rather than the tool dictating the user's activity," learning collaboratively can increase knowledge because the learner becomes actively engaged in the task, rather than passively approaching it.

I really like the message where it says that students become more actively engaged when they control the tool rather than the tool dictating the user's activity. The students then take control of their learning. They map the course they want to take.

this was very interesting - I found myself wondering how much of it was still relevant given its "age." Crazy that 2008 is "old" but social media has changed so much since then!
