The use of Twitter in the Creation of Educational Professional Learning Opportunities: ... - 4 views

  •
This study looked at how Twitter-using educators were using Twitter to collaborate, network, or engage in professional development
  •
Molly, I really enjoyed this article. It is especially relevant with this course. Honestly, I could never image using Twitter as any kind of professional resource, but after reading this and using Twitter for this class and one other, I can see how it would benefit educator to collaborate. It is also very easy to use. Thank you for sharing this article!
  •
Hi Molly, This is very appropriate for our class, especially since we are using Twitter to share articles and resources with each other - - in our own personal learning environment. I focused on the discussion portion of this article. I noticed that for educators, personal learning networks are important and useful for professional development. It was interesting that the study found greater use in high school environments (maybe because we are influenced by our students?). The benefits of Twitter and professional development, is that one can access and participate at any time and any location - - it is self-directed! I would be interested in finding out how to promote this type of professional development within a school. What type of training is needed for educators to get started? How would one track satisfaction and learning?

Project Based Learning - 1 views

From Pre-K to Ph.D. - Project-Based Learning Many educators, faced with the demands placed on them by the NCLB, feel that projects are a luxury for which there is no time. Some educators seem to think that project-based learning is just for younger children, and by the time you get to the middle schools and high schools projects have all but disappeared.

Schools | Study: It's not teacher, but method that matters | The Detroit News - 1 views

  • A study by a Nobel Prize-winning physicist — now a science adviser to President Barack Obama — suggests that how you teach is more important than who does the teaching. He found that in nearly identical classes, Canadian college students learned more from teaching assistants using interactive tools than from a veteran professor giving a traditional lecture. The students who had to engage interactively using the TV remote-like devices scored about twice as high on a test compared with those who heard the normal lecture, according to a study published Thursday in the journal Science.

If you have a teenager in high school most likely you have shelled out $100 for a TI calculator. These calculators have changed very little in the last 30 years. Dspite the explosion in technology TI has managed to maintain its monopoly like hold on the public schools with out improving it's technology, except to occasionally to change the color of the cover. It's time to revolt! Demos is a free online graphing calculator which frankly, leaves TI calculators in the dust. It can do everything a TI calculator can do and more...and it's free.

Facebook as an Instructional Technology Tool - 1 views

This article gives one professors experiences on their successful use of Facebook in their British Literary History course. Facebook subsisted for the discussion forum common to a good many course management systems. Students use it because they were already there (on Facebook) and they found the use interesting.

This is a student's response to using Facebook to generate discussion in a British Literature History class. Even though it is collegiate level, I think that this scenario could definitely work in the high school setting.

I liked this blog post for two reasons. One, it gets you thinking about how you can use twitter in your everyday class. How will my students use this tool/app. Two, it can be used for formal assessing different concepts to see if your students are understanding. It's simple, short, and to the point in answering questions. Teachers can get a quick glance at what students know and what needs to be retaught.

It amazes me how vast the uses for Twitter are. The more I read about how it can be used for PD and broadening my own scope of learning, the more impressed I am. So many students already use it for social/personal reasons, why not tap into the source and reach the kids where they are? I noticed at Open House for my high school son last night that many teachers are using Twitter to keep the parents in the loop, but to also share resources with the students instead of maintaining formal, dated teacher websites.

Thanks for sharing this Mary! I had never heard of Edutopia before this, I will have to look into this more as it seems to be a popular social network platform among our group.

I love reading articles from Edutopia and this was no exception. It is amazing how much knowledge can be gained by the use of Twitter. I participated in a few PD type discussions and have found them very useful. The tips provided are very helpful. Thank you for sharing this article.
