This is a good week to remember heroic teachers: the teachers who led their children, holding hands, away from the smoking World Trade Center towers on 9/11; the teachers in Baton Rouge and Houston who welcomed a dozen terrified "Katrina kids" into their already-overcrowded classrooms, improvising seating, books and assignments.

Although the past several generations have seen declining gender inequalities in educational attainment, gender-based differences in the fields of study we choose seem to persist (see here). For example, the percentage of women obtaining degrees in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields has remained exceedingly static in the last few decades (see here).

With all the recent coverage of Occupy Wall Street and President Obama's jobs bill, we've heard a lot of polling results showing that a large plurality of Americans supports raising taxes on high earners, and that this support is strong among both Democrats and Republicans.
