4,177 Students and One Principal: A Day in the Life at Francis Lewis High School - SchoolBook - 0 views

  •
Principals these days are expected to be a little bit of many different things: manager, educator, financial whiz, social worker, enforcer, data analyst, cheerleader and contortionist (figuratively, at least). They are the people with whom the buck stops. Fernanda Santos, who covers city schools for The Times, is tagging along with a city school principal all day. Follow along as she reports on her day with Musa Ali Shama, principal of the large and enduring Francis Lewis High School.

The lies the one percenters tell about teacher pensions. « Fred Klonsky's blog - 0 views

  •
Last week the media gave some space to a report from the Illinois Policy Institute, a right-wing corporate think tank, that claimed that 48 percent of teachers in the state have their pension contributions paid for by their local board. What misleading nonsense.

Shanker Blog » NAEP Shifting - 0 views

  •
Tomorrow, the education world will get the results of the 2011 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), often referred to as the "nation's report card." The findings - reading and math scores among a representative sample of fourth and eighth graders - will drive at least part of the debate for the next two years, when the next round comes out. I'm going to make a prediction, one that is definitely a generalization, but is hardly uncommon in policy debates: People on all "sides" will interpret the results favorably no matter how they turn out.

Heritage Foundation & American Enterprise Institute call teachers stupid and overpaid - 0 views

  •
The Heritage Foundation and the American Enterprise Institute have put out a report purporting to show that public school teachers are overpaid. It's 23 pages of elaborate statistical justification of right-wing beliefs, all built on a foundation of right-wing assumptions. The basic claims are that while teachers are underpaid relative to other people with similar levels of education, in fact they are overpaid because education programs are easier than other majors and also, teachers are stupid; that public school teachers earn more than private school teachers and this shows they earn more than the market should support; and that people who leave teaching earn less while people who enter teaching earn more, therefore teachers are overpaid.

Zephyr Teachout: Hedge Funders and Their Corrupt Effort to Take Over Public Education in New York | Diane Ravitch's blog - 0 views

  •
"Zephyr Teachout, the Fordham University law professor who ran against Governor Andrew Cuomo in the recent gubernatorial election, released  a powerful and shocking-but well documented-report on the powerful hedge funds that seek to gain control of education in New York state. They are very, very rich. They have no particular expertise in education, nor are they accountable to anyone. Yet they are attempting to privatize one of the most important public institutions of our society. Teachout's co-author was Mohammad Khan. His contact information is listed below."

"Science isn't important only to scientists or those who profess an interest in it. Whether you find fascinating every new discovery reported or you stopped taking science in school as soon as you could, a base level understanding is crucial for modern citizens to ground their engagement in the national conversation about science-related issues."

'The Teacher Wars,' Dana Goldstein's History of Education - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  •
"Ms. Goldstein's book is meticulously fair and disarmingly balanced, serving up historical commentary instead of a searing philippic. A hate-read is nigh impossible. (Trust me, I tried.) While Ms. Goldstein is sympathetic to the unionized public-school teacher, she also thinks the profession is hamstrung by a defensive selfishness, harboring too fine a memory for ancient wounds. The book skips nimbly from history to on-the-ground reporting to policy prescription, never falling on its face. "

Jersey Jazzman, Stephen Colbert, and Campbell Brown | Diane Ravitch's blog - 0 views

"Jersey jazzman has another great piece about tenure. He writes: "I can only hope that Campbell Brown's appearance last night on The Colbert Report is typical of what she is going to bring to the debate over school workplace protections. Because if this is the best the anti-tenure side can muster, we teachers will easily win the debate - provided we ever get a chance to participate." "

Shanker Blog » Rethinking The Use Of Simple Achievement Gap Measures In School Accountability Systems - 0 views

  •
"Achievement gaps have also, however, taken on a very different role over the past 10 or so years. The sizes of gaps, and extent of "gap closing," are routinely used by reporters and advocates to judge the performance of schools, school districts, and states. In addition, gaps and gap trends are employed directly in formal accountability systems (e.g., states' school grading systems), in which they are conceptualized as performance measures. Although simple measures of the magnitude of or changes in achievement gaps are potentially very useful in several different contexts, they are poor gauges of school performance, and shouldn't be the basis for high-stakes rewards and punishments in any accountability system. Let's take a quick look at four problems with using gaps in the latter context."

Using Student Test Scores to Fire Teachers: No More Reliable Than a Coin Toss - Living in Dialogue - 0 views

  •
"Public school teachers and principals deserve fair treatment on important decisions about who should be retained and who should be fired. They should not be fired based on student test scores because the variation in student test scores is random. It is no more reliable than a coin toss. How wise would it be to fire doctors or lawyers based on a coin toss? Heads they stay. Tails they go. Imagine what this would do the moral of staff who had also most no control over whether they stayed or were fired. In this report, we will look at the scientific research (or lack of it) on using student test scores to evaluate teachers."

How Strong Are U.S. Teacher Unions? - A State-By-State Comparison - 0 views

  •
"Everyone knows that teacher unions matter in education politics and policies, but it's hard to determine just how much they matter-and whether they wield greater influence in some places than in others. There's plenty of conventional wisdom on this topic, mostly along the lines of, "unions are most powerful where they represent most teachers and least consequential where their bargaining rights and revenues are restricted."  But is that really true? And even if it is, does it oversimplify a much more complex and nuanced situation?"

Do the Charter School Hustle - Truthdig - 0 views

  •
"Editor's note: The author of this piece is an urban high school teacher who is writing under a pseudonym in order to protect the privacy of his students and his colleagues. Since I'm a public school teacher, everybody always asks me what I think about charter schools. They usually ask it with a certain expression, their eyes alert and their head poised at an angle, as if they are readying themselves for an explosion, or at least a case of spontaneous combustion. I usually respond with some variation of this: It's complicated. You got an hour?"

The Educated Reporter: New Study Finds Early Predictors of Charter School Success - 0 views

  •
"A charter school's performance in its first three years of operation is a solid predictor of the program's long-term chances of success, a new study by Stanford University researchers concludes. On Wednesday Stanford's Center for Research on Education Outcomes (CREDO) published Charter School Growth and Replication, which focuses on what can be learned from the track records of more than 1,300 independently managed public schools and nearly 170 Charter Management Organizations (CMOs). Choosing Blindly - Instructional Materials, Teacher Effectiveness, and the Common Core - 0 views

  •
There is strong evidence that the choice of instructional materials has large effects on student learning-effects that rival in size those that are associated with differences in teacher effectiveness.  But whereas improving teacher quality through changes in the preparation and professional development of teachers and the human resources policies surrounding their employment is challenging, expensive, and time-consuming, making better choices among available instructional materials should be relatively easy, inexpensive, and quick.

A Rotting Apple: Education Redlining in New York City | The Schott Foundation for Public Education - 0 views

  •
In New York City public schools, a student's educational outcomes and opportunity to learn are statistically more determined by where he or she lives than their abilities, according to A Rotting Apple: Education Redlining in New York City, released by the Schott Foundation for Public Education. Primarily because of New York City policies and practices that result in an inequitable distribution of educational resources and intensify the impact of poverty, children who are poor, Black and Hispanic have far less of an opportunity to learn the skills needed to succeed on state and federal assessments. They are also much less likely to have an opportunity to be identified for Gifted and Talented programs, to attend selective high schools or to obtain diplomas qualifying them for college or a good job. High-performing schools, on the other hand, tend to be located in economically advantaged areas.
