From School Grades to Common Core: Debunking the Accountability Scam - Living in Dialog... - 0 views

  •
"Here is the bitter truth. Standardized tests are a political weapon and can be used to tell whatever story you want. The campaign to hold schools and teachers "accountable" for test scores is a political project designed to deflect responsibility away from people who have gotten obscenely wealthy over the past few decades. The concept of "failing schools" is a bogus one. Schools are being shut down not in the interest of the children who attend them, but in order to create opportunities for new players in the education marketplace."

The kids didn't fail; N.Y.'s testing system did - Times Union - 0 views

"We opted out, not for us, but for the other students who are subjected to this testing regimen. This is our way of protesting for the students with disabilities, students whose primary language is not English, and students who were administered a test they were not prepared for. The tests are not developmentally appropriate, have not been properly field-tested and take away from other critical areas of education that are quickly dwindling - like art and music. We also are opposed to student test results being tied to teacher performance."

"In this post, teacher Maria Baldassarre-Hopkins describes the process in which she and other educators participated, setting cut scores for the new Common Core tests in New York. She signed a confidentiality agreement, so she is discreet on many questions and issues."

The Error That Caused the New York Test Scores to Collapse | Diane Ravitch's blog - 0 views

  •
"Here is the reason for the collapse of test scores in New York City and New York State. State officials decided that New York test scores should be aligned with the achievement levels of the federally-administered National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)."

Driven by data … right off a cliff | Gary Rubinstein's Blog - 0 views

"So I looked carefully at the data and found that these test scores do, in fact, prove there was some lying going on.  But it is not the lie that that Klein and Duncan were talking about.  The lie that these test scores reveal is the one about charter schools being better than public schools."

The Intricate Plot That Is Common Core | deutsch29 - 0 views

  •
"If anyone tells you that Common Core (CCSS) is a "state-led" effort, "developed by teachers," that person is either misinformed or attempting to deceive you. Mona McDermott of United Opt Out has mapped the organizations behind CCSS. She presents discussion of their interwoven involvements in this 9-minute youtube presentation. Once you view her work, you will no longer be vulnerable to the corporate- and government-endorsed message that CCSS is "grass roots." The endgame of CCSS is massive data acquisition."

Jersey Jazzman: "College AND Career Ready": A Useless, Phony Phrase - 0 views

  •
"According to the 2011 American Community Survey from the Census Bureau, 32.9 percent of New Yorkers (state, not city) 25 or older had at least a bachelor's degree. On the new,"more realistic" test scores released for New York State this week, 31 percent of students demonstrated "proficiency." Coincidence? Perhaps, but it's got me thinking about something that's bothered me for a while..."

Bennett-gate And The Politics Of Grading Schools - 0 views

  •
"But based on an analysis conducted by Matt DiCarlo  of the Albert Shanker Institute, the grading system devised for Indiana had more to do with the characteristics of the students served by schools than it had to do with giving parents and policymakers real insight into the effectiveness of the schools."

Don't Worry About Your Test Scores - Finding Common Ground - Education Week - 0 views

  •
"We were cautioned our test scores would go down. We were told not to worry. We were told not to take these lower scores on our 2013 state assessments...personally. You'll have to excuse me, but I do. It's a bit personal when I work with students who cry because they're worried about their score on state assessments or teachers...good teachers...who worry day and night that the state assessments will make them look as if they are poor teachers."

Those Phony, Misleading Test Scores: A NY Principal Reacts | Diane Ravitch's blog - 0 views

  •
"Katie Zahedi is principal of Linden Avenue Middle School in Red Hook, New York, which is located in upstate Dutchess County. She is active in the association of New York Principals who bravely oppose the State Education Department's educator evaluation plan based mostly on test scores. Zahedi has been a principal and assistant principal at her school for twelve years. The views she expresses here are solely her own and not those of the district or her school. Suffice it to say that she is a woman of unusual integrity and courage, who is determined to speak truth to power. She wrote this piece for the blog in response to the release of the Common Core test results in New York, in which scores collapsed across the state."

In Plain English: Why "Reform" is the Problem, Not the Solution | Diane Ravitch's blog - 0 views

  •
"Alan Brown, a professor in North Carolina, wrote this open letter to State Senator Berger, who has sponsored a series of destructive bills that were passed into law. It was published here. It is clear, informed, and coherent. The tone is friendly and non-confrontational. Brown invites Senator Berger to look at the evidence. This letter could serve as a model. Everyone should write to their elected representatives, bringing to light the facts of your own state."

Goldstein: Common Core tests are not the answer in child-centered education - NY Daily ... - 0 views

Shock Doctrine: five reasons not to trust the results of the new state tests - 0 views

  •
"Dear parents: As you may have probably heard, the new state test scores were released to the press and they are disastrous. Only 31% of students in New York State passed the new Common Core exams in reading and math. More than one third -- or 36% -- of 3rd graders throughout the state got a level I in English; which means they essentially flunked.  In NYC, only 26 percent of students passed the exams in English, and 30 percent passed in math - meaning they had a level 3 or 4.  Only 5% of students in Rochester passed.  Though children's individual scores won't be available to parents until late August, I urge you not to panic when you see them.  My advice is not to believe a word of any of this.  The new Common Core exams and test scores are politically motivated, and are based neither on reason or evidence.  They were pre-ordained to fit the ideological goals of Commissioner King and the other educrats who are intent on imposing damaging policies on our schools.  Here are five reasons not to trust the new scores"

Who Is Destroying Public Education in New York State? | Diane Ravitch's blog - 0 views

"King and Tisch seem determined to destroy public confidence in public education, to demoralize teachers and principals, and to crush students' love of learning by making testing the only consequential aspect of their schooling."

Carol Burris: What big drop in new standardized test scores really means - 0 views

  •
"The rationale here is muddled at best, but the detriments are obvious. For instance, young students in New York State who are developing as they should will be placed in remedial services, forgoing enrichment in the arts because they are a "2" and thus below the new proficiency level. That is where the vast majority of students fall on the new scales - below proficiency and off the "road to college readiness."  Students, who in reality may not need support will be sorted into special education or "response to intervention" services.  Parents will worry for their children's future. The newspapers will bash the public schools and their teachers at a time when morale is already at an extreme low. The optimism teachers first felt about the Common Core State Standards is fading as the standards and their tests roll into classrooms."

Conservative Activists File Lawsuit to Cripple Public Sector Unions | Diane Ravitch's blog - 0 views

  •
"Last November, anti-union groups put a measure on the ballot in California called Prop 32, whose purpose was to reduce the political influence of unions by reducing their funding. Prop 32 was soundly defeated, but its proponents are back with a lawsuit to achieve the same purpose. If they win, they could cripple public sector unions across the nation."

Jeff Bezos' Other Endeavor: Charter Schools, Neoliberal Education Reforms | The Nation - 0 views

  •
"There's one area where Bezos has been hyper-active, but largely unknown to the general public: education reform. A look at the Bezos Family Foundation, which was founded by Jackie and Mike Bezos but is financed primarily by Jeff Bezos, reveals a fairly aggressive effort in recent years to press forward with a fairly neoliberal education agenda"
