Surface: Is it 'Microsoft's iPad', or something else? | ZDNet - 3 views

  • Who would have thought starving partners of support would yield bad results?
  • For me, the Surface is a "Wordbook", a new device form-factor for running Word in ultra-portable, cloud-connected mode that also happens to be one degree away from a market ready post-PC tablet.
  • Does the market actually want a device that runs Office first, and does all the other tablet tasks second? Hardly.
  •
"Now that I actually own an Surface, it's clear to me what it's about. Spoiler: it's not an iPad."
  •
The very fact that people feel the need to make a comparison to the ipad proves that competitors lost

Facebook is chipping away at privacy - and my profile has been exposed | Technology | T... - 0 views

  •
Alex Hern unpacks the irony encoded within Facebook's ever evolving privacy settings. Another reminder why we need to be ever so vigilant about Facebook and every social media platform for that matter. Facebook can truthfully say that it does what it promises, and even offers settings that let people lock-down their own accounts, while designing the site so even internet-savvy users like me will end up exposing information we never intended to make public.

Facebook Is About To Make Catfishing Problems Even Worse | open thinking - 0 views

  •
Alec Couros Already, Facebook is plagued with identity thieves who adversely affect the safety, comfort, and freedom of many of its users, and the problem will only continue to grow with these types of half-baked efforts. You may not be affected now, but unless Facebook does something to fully address this issue, you almost certainly will be.

How Google Works - Culture Lifestyle - Portfolio.com - 6 views

  •
In the past 12 months, Google doubled its staff, tinkered with its search engine to speed up results, and now answers more queries than Microsoft and Yahoo combined. But there's one query we had to answer ourselves: How does Google work?

Essay on use of iPad by academics | Inside Higher Ed - 3 views

  •
Two years ago I wrote a column for Inside Higher Ed entitled "The iPad for Academics." Now, two years and two new models of iPad later, it seems time to revisit some of that original column: How well does it stand up, how did my predictions turn out, and what have I learned since then? The answers are, roughly, "good" "O.K." and "a lot." When I wrote my column, no one was sure what the future held for the iPad, and there was serious skepticism about the more apocalyptic predictions. In fact, somewhat boringly, Apple's release of the iPad did what most Apple products do -- change the world, sell millions of units, and alter our information ecosystem irrevocably -- but it didn't end the world.

How To Decide Which Social Network You Should Use | Edudemic - 0 views

The following infographic from business consultant Zintro does a decent job summarizing the numbers, pros and cons, and what makes each network different. While it is not exhaustive (where's Pinterest?!), it's helpful.

How to get a page one Google page ranking for under $100 - 5 views

  •
So you want to get on the front page of Google? What business does not want to get there - ideally ranking in the top-ten? One secret of getting on Google's front page is simple. Splash the cash - and keep defending your spot by continually outbidding your competitor, irrespective of cost. Or, there is a far more frugal solution, according to Sydney-based small business strategist Robert McAnderson, author of the new book DNO the SEO Revolution: a how-to-guide for achieving permanent page-one rankings for under $100.

Dark Side of the iPad ~ Collecting student projects is difficult! | John Larkin - 6 views

  •
"....... the iPad has a dark side. Particularly for a teacher working with a class of students, each with their own iPad. Consider a teacher that simply wants to facilitate teaching and learning and does not wish to devote hours to dealing with an interface that can at times be clunky, inconsistent and simply involves too many steps to get it to work. Which interface!? The conventional task of collecting, assessing and returning student works that were created on an iPad."

Booko: Compare book & DVD prices in Australia with Booko - 2 views

  •
Booko is a site with a very simple goal - to find the cheapest place to buy books & DVDs in Australia. This site started out as a personal itch and has slowly grown into a very handy site, slowly adding more shops for comparison and more features to make it easier to use. You can read more about Booko at the Blogo. What does it do? Booko is not an online shop. It goes out to the Internet and looks up book & DVD prices for you and figures out the shipping costs. For the international sites like the Amazons (.com and .co.uk), the prices are converted into Aussie dollars.

I have managed to get the Windows powered assessment and reporting software Accelerus that our school uses running on my OSX laptop. Check out the screenshot below. Was a bit tricky but Google was my friend as I tried out a couple of different ideas. The best guide I found was perhaps this one. It does require a knowledge of partitions and terminal commands but it worked a treat fo me. Along the way, I learned heaps and enjoyed the tinkering. I might have some fun and try to get Ubuntu Linux running again on this computer.

Instructional Technology: Villain of the Piece-Or Savior? - Top Performers - Education ... - 0 views

"According to Andreas Schleicher, there is no evidence from the PISA data yet of a consistent relationship between the use of education technology and superior student performance.  That, however, certainly does not mean that no such relationship will exist in the future, just that it hasn't happened yet, at least not at the scale required to show up in the PISA surveys. R U Ready 4Twitter? | Langwitches Blog - 3 views

  •
"I am still amazed at the amount of educators, who believe that Twitter holds NO VALUE for their professional learning. Many hold on to the belief that Twitter is a waste of time, used to follow celebrities, listen to gossip and bad hair day complaints. If YOU were able to get past that initial Twitter reputation, diving into the Twittersphere can be scary, OVERWHELMING and participating in this global conversation platform does not necessarily come naturally to everybody."

12 Characteristics Of An iPad-friendly Classroom | TeachThought - 4 views

  •
"It can help to start out by asking yourself some important questions, such as "What can the iPad do that is not possible without it? Put another way, what problems does the iPad solve?" But the learning environment you're starting with can make a big difference as well. It's one thing to come up with individual lesson plans high on the wiz-bang factor, but low in terms of sustainability. Below are 4 distinct areas of instruction and instructional design that can help frame the concept of iPad integration. Curriculum, Instruction, Assessment, and Integration."
