BBC News - HS2: 12 arguments for and against - 0 views

  •
Labour has cast doubt on the future of HS2 but just what are the arguments for and against a new high-speed rail link? This article is about the discussions in England, about a highspeed trailway system. Authorities are arguing if it will be for the benefit or disfavor of the country. The opportunity cost for connecting the urban and rural areas and providing ultimate transportation between big cities and small towns; is the extreme flow of money from minor settlements to metropolitan areas, causing a huge economic leap and difference between them.

India in danger of moving towards water scarcity condition: Asian Development Bank - 0 views

  •
An Asian Development Bank said that India is in danger because of the water scarcity conditions. The annual average of water is reducing per capita and it will cause a water scarcity. They are in a dangerous position. Unfortunately, there are also some other things that causes the increase of the scarcity like more demand of water to factories or some changes of amount of water of rainfalls. I think this is a really important problem, especially for this times. Last year, it didn't rain very much in my city and we had some little problems about water because we didn't have any in our dam. For several weeks, we didn't have much water and I had never thought that would be a difficult thing. It is hard to take a shower, or to brush my teeth with less water. This article was interesting because water is like the most important thing in our life because without water, we can't do anything. I also related water scarcity to my city this summer and I hope that it will rain a lot this year.

Nepal clears GMR plan for $1.4 billion hydroelectric plant - 2 views

  •
In order to meet the demands of electricity in Nepal as well as export electricity to power-hungry India, the Nepal government agreed allow GMR to construct the 900-megawatt Upper Karnali hydroelectric power plant in the northwest. The project set for completion in 2021, which will provide 12 per cent energy free to Nepal to ease a crippling power shortage and help its economy emerge. An agreement was signed to construct transmission lines across the border to transmit the remaining electricity to India, which can help reducing the extreme scarcity of electricity in India. I agree with the project because this can decrease the scarcity level in both Nepal and India.

Food waste adds pressure on scarce water resources in UAE - 1 views

  •
By Binsal Abdul Kader, Staff Reporter Published: 07:00 July 13, 2014 Abu Dhabi: Food waste adds pressure on the UAE's scarce water resources, according to a senior official of the UN's Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO). The article talks about food waste in the UAE and how it affects the current issue of water scarcity. Since production of food needs water, so when it goes to waste the water used to produce goes to waste. In addition to wasting of water, all natural resources used to grow, process, package, transport, and to market in goes to waste. The UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation representitive stated that more public awareness is needed to inform the population of water scarcity. In addition to that he informed up to 30 percent of natural resources and energy used to produce food is wasted along with the lost or wasted food. That tells us that more water is even wasted, while other countries suffer from starvation and lack of water. This article interested me as this is new information so I agree that public awarness should be increased as this is a huge issue.

Liberia in 'trees for cash' deal - 2 views

  •
Liberia was going through a lot of deforestation, and was going to become the number one deforested country. Therefore Norway has jumped in to help with this crisis, by saying they will help pay for development aid, because there have been fears that the Ebola crisis would increase the logging in Liberia, who are really desperate for cash. This part of the news shows how Liberia would cut all their trees and take away all of their valuable resources for the money to help cure it's people. As of now Norway will pay the impoverished West African country $150m (£91.4m) to stop deforestation by 2020.

California: Measure to Overhaul Water Management - 2 views

  •
Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation on Tuesday overhauling the state's management of its groundwater supply, bringing it in line with other states that have long regulated their wells. This is really important because california has large agriculture based businesses (central valley). In fact, the oppositions to the legislature were people in the agriculture business. This potentially allows water companies and regulators to intervene if water use is excessive or improper. This is an article directly discussing scarcity of water and natural resources and how the government regulates these resources. This passing of this legislature could also have some opportunity cost along with it; less water=maybe more expensive food, less food, more chance of dying crops (?)

Brazil's idea for future mobility: the good old bus - 3 views

  •
this article talks about how Curitiba is trying (as usual) to not waste the scarce resources that we have by reducing (or trying to reduce) the combustion of fossil fuels so Curitiba (and many parts of Brazil) is taking one step closer of being a sustainable place.this articles also shows that the people who are producing this product analyzed what the people in the urban areas want most (transportation)and then tried to meet there needs, so the demand for this product is great and may mean that the materials used to make a regular car are used to make BRTs

Cleaning Ganga will take 18 years & massive investment: Centre to Supreme Court - The E... - 2 views

  •
The holy river of Ganga that flows through new Delhi, capital of India, supports the lives of people living in about 118 towns. Over time this river has become highly polluted; some factors to blame for this would be modernization and ignorance. During the summer of 2014 a new Prime Minister was elected who has set up a project to clean this water body. The opportunity cost in saving this water body is time and financial resources. Roughly, it is said that the government plans of completing this project over 18 years while using millions of INR. The government is giving up these valuable resources to achieve something that is of high importance.
