Without a price on carbon, oil will find a way - The Washington Post - 1 views

  •
This article talks about environmental sustainability, especially in the US, in terms of the carbon and oil situation. Hindering some paths of oil trade, may slow down the trade in the early stages, however there will be other paths since the international demand is so high right now. The price is steadily decreasing with the increased demand. The only ways to control this demand for oil that may be hurting our planet would be to tax the carbon (increasing the price), therefore decreasing demand.

Oil market equilibrium fragile, says think tank - UPI.com - 0 views

  •
This article focuses on the equilibrium in the oil market, or in this case a "fragile" equilibrium. Recently, Europe as well as other parts of the world, have been trying to find alternatives for using oil. For everything, other than transportation, there is an alternative to burning oil. So in places where the population is steady, and not rising dramatically...the demand for oil is going down, therefore shifting the demand curve and the equilibrium price. However there are still many countries in which the demand for oil is growing. I the oil industry, the equilibrium is constatly wavering...but so far, it has stayed in a range and hasn't strayed too far from that range yet.

Oil Retreat Prompts OPEC Price Debate - 0 views

  •
This article is related to oil prices; which are very much connected to our demand for them and the amount that can be supplied. This particular article is in reference to lower oil prices; which would increase the demand for the oil.
  •
It is so amazing to see, how if a country is having problems, then the price for oil is drastically changed. Also, if the price for oil decreases then more countries are willing to buy it and hence it circles around because then the supply becomes limited and the price for oil rises again.

Oil drops on economic news and demand worries - 0 views

  •
This article shows that the oil prices drops. This is hurting the demand for energy. With all the economic worries, yet the oil price is still dropping it is a concern for economic melt down. Because demand is the quantity of a good that consumers are willing and able to purchase at a given price in a given time period, Oil drops will increase the amount of people buying the oil and yet one day they will raise again.

  •
This article tells the balance of payments of Ghana skyrockets comparing to the same period in 2011. The main reason is the falling price of cocoa beans, which is a main export of Ghana, and the falling export volumes. With the export going down and imports of oil, and other non-oil imports skyrocket, the balance of payment become negative value.

Oil spill in River Lark, Bury St Edmunds covers over two miles - 0 views

  •
Hello, This article talks about problem and the negative externality an 5,000 gallon oil spill has caused in a local river, which covered over two miles. The article talks about the clean up act and how some fish are dying. The article does not talk about how the dying fish will affect local trade, however, I think it should not affect it that greatly due to the fact there are other rivers and seas from which to fish in and the river was quiet small. However, the oil could get into people's drinking supply and it could make people ill. From, Tim

Oil giants fined for price-fixing | Fin24 - 4 views

  •
This article discusses how petroleum countries in South Africa were fined for price-fixing. This is an example of large firms who form a collusive oligopoly, because they are working together to agree on prices that will maximize their joint revenue. However, due to the fact that this means higher prices for consumers, it was an illegal agreement and so the firms are being fined.

Palm Oil and the Economy - 0 views

  •
Basically what this article is trying to convey is the issue of the unstable price of palm oil in Malaysia and how it affects and is affected by the economy. The decease in demand of palm oil due to high stock and a festive season ending is assumed to increase due to other festive seasons starting therefore predictably showing a recovery trend.
  •
This is an example of the non-price determinant of demand that we learned about earlier, seasonal change. As different festive seasons approach, different demands change. Another example would be as some cultures celebrate Halloween at the end of October, the demand for pumpkins (and candy!) increases.

Cyprus - Address by the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade . . . - 0 views

  •
This article shows the real-life application to the new ideas we've been discussing in terms of the Republic of Cyprus. "Cyprus has so far been an energy island -an isolated energy system- and has till recently been almost totally dependent on imports of oil which burden the current account balance. A bright horizon of peace, cooperation and economic growth will then open up for the area of the Eastern Mediterranean, to the benefit not only of the countries and peoples of the area but also of our wider European family." I have included the conclusion to the article as well, which wraps up this sustainability-conscious article."In shaping the world of today and tomorrow through their decisions on energy issues, visionary leaders will aim at improving the prospects of both the current and future generations in terms of economic and social development and of sustainability, and certainly in terms of establishing and strengthening peaceful and hence productive international relations."

A sea change in the consumption of a resource that people take for granted may be in store: something cheap, plentiful, widely enjoyed and a part of daily life. And it isn't oil. The two commodities have a great deal in common: Like oil, meat receives government subsidies in the U.S.

Inflation expected to rise - Telegraph - 0 views

  •
Victoria Cadman, economist at Investec, said no change in the rate of inflation would be an "uncomfortable reality" for the Bank of England, which confidently forecast inflation to fall rapidly throughout 2012 and into 2013. The Bank's policy-makers will be less inclined to pump more money into the economy through its quantitative easing programme if inflation continues to remain above target. This article discusses the expected increase in inflation figures which are coming out tomorrow because of high oil and food prices. These increases in inflation will lead to a higher cost of living, which is undesirable for pretty much everyone.

USATODAY.com - Wal-Mart's influence grows - 0 views

  •
"Wal-Mart's influence on the U.S. economy has reached levels not seen by a single company since the 19th-century rise of Standard Oil, economists and historians say" To state that Wal-Mart is huge would be an understatement and in my perspective, it is the perfect example of economies of scale. The article is a bit lenthy though but the points are well explained.
