"The Krashen Studies Stepehen Krashen is one of the leading reading researchers and one of the most critical analysts of reading research. Both individually and with colleagues, he has studied the impact on academic achievement of school and public libraries as well as the availability of reading materials in the home. His studies show consistently that students who have access to more reading materials from all of these sources-and particularly materials on subjects that interest them-are more likely to read voluntarily, read in greater volume, read more often, and score better on achievement tests. Indeed, Krashen challenges head-on some of the most skeptical critics of studies linking school libraries and test scores."

Hold the dates -- more info to come! EC Ning 2011 Summer Webstitute Title: Reading Classic and Young Adult Literature with Students This Webstitute emerges from the passionate interest of English Language Arts folks in reading texts of all kinds. All too often, it seems the we see classic and YA lit as mutually exclusive, even going so far as to position one as being "better" than the other, educationally, culturally, and sometimes even morally. In this Webstitute, we are bringing together accomplished teachers, writers, and scholars to explore the best of each world, as well as areas where they blend to create a rich learning environment. Dates: July 11 & 12, 4-7 pm EST Place: Elluminate, EC Ning, etc. Really supportive and helpful community of English educators. They will welcome you with open arms and good ideas. Note "New Teachers" Group.

What is literacy today? The Daring Librarian explains - The Answer Sheet - The Washingt... - 0 views

Note that the Daring Librarian suggests beginning with a wiki for ease in creating a presence on the Web. Great idea for class website. "I turned to The Daring Librarian for insights and had the opportunity to interview her alter ego, Gwyneth Anne Jones, one of the Library Journal's Movers & Shakers of 2011. Gwyneth works as teacher-librarian in Laurel, Maryland, and serves on the ISTE Board of Directors. Widely recognized in the Web 2.0 circuit, Gwyneth is known for her outgoing presence and professional generosity. She calls herself an "enthusiastic champion of transliteracy, creative commons, open source, shameless sharing" and "fearless fighter of filters!""

For many, VV&M's chapter 6 will serve as a review of concepts like metacognition and prior knowledge. That's cool because we need to think of these in light of the reading - writing process. Ali writes of the "spark" to learn and how we can flame it with tradebooks that catch readers' interest and encourage lifelong learning with text.

Tom March and Bernie Dodge were originators of the WebQuest. This is Tom's site and the quality control is evident with ratings according to a strict rubric that requires an inquiry task that is transformative.

Kelli has cleverly used many of the functions of the wiki to engage her students -- they can upload their completed files and contribute to the discussion and the links are always current since she's used RSS feeds.

Not bad. Could be written a bit better and rubric is bare bones but the intro, task, and process are pretty well done.

"The latest Ofsted Study from the UK supports Bennett's observation: Students are more competent and confident digital citizens when they are specifically trained how to respond to online experiences that make them feel uncomfortable. Light filtering support with training helps children learn to protect themselves and use the Web wisely more than massive block-out filtering."
