Coca-Cola, Ford, Nike, Procter & Gamble, and Unilever are among the 9 founding members of the Bioplastic Feedstock Alliance, which seeks to encourage the use of sustainable materials to make bio-plastics.

Italian company Bio-on developed a new bioplastic that is intended to reduce the environmental impact of e-waste from smart phones, computers, and other devices. The substance serves as a platform for electronic circuits and is 100% biodegradable.

From tomatoes and paper pulp to lignin and sugar beets, it seems like researchers played with just about every fauna they could find in the search for the next great bioplastic feedstock this year.

Ford and H.J. Heinz are working to incorporate bioplastics made from dried tomato skins into various vehicle components. The plant-based materials are expected to replace traditional plastics derived from petroleum.

Starbucks, Nestle and the University of Cincinnati are among the organizations turning spent coffee grounds into bioplastics, laundry detergents and biodiesel, The Guardian reports.
