World's biggest spirits maker Diageo Plc has agreed to buy a 53.4 percent stake in Indian liquor baron Vijay Mallya's United Spirits for Rs 11,166.5 crore in a multi-structured deal, which may provide Vijay Mallya a breather from problems emanating from the grounded Kingfisher Airlines.

The company has reported a jump of over six-fold in its net profit at Rs 345.30 crore for the quarter ended September 30, 2012 as compared to Rs 53.80 crore for the same quarter in the previous year. Total income of the company has increased by 5.45% at Rs 604.84 crore for quarter under review as compared to Rs 573.55 crore for the quarter ended September 30, 2011.

Barley prices closed higher by 0.18 per cent on Thursday at NCDEX as a result of strong demand from beer and cattle-feed making industries against restricted supply in physical markets.
