I've been consistently surprised and pleased by the insightful feedback I receive from project creators, and this recent email from Layne Mosler of the Taxi Gourmet project is no exception. Project promotion is a unique endeavor for each creator, but the helpful tips she outlines below are universal. I had to share!

Pedicabber works for tips, love of biking | Pedicab & Rickshaw Blog - 0 views

  • Pedicabber works for tips, love of biking filed under: Pedicab News — wpmsp @ 6:54 pm December 23rd, 2009 By Daniel Luscombe Wearing a black leather jacket reminiscent of Johnny Ramone, well-manicured facial hair and a big grin, Tony Benedict, owner of Pure Power Pedicab, is East Lansing’s one and only bicycle taxi. Benedict, an East Lansing resident and former paramedic, has been serving the East Lansing community since November 2008 with his human-powered mode of transportation. “I go completely on tips, and I do that because I don’t want to set a set rate,” Benedict said. “Some people just want a ride and they really don’t have a lot of money. I figure everyone should have a ride if they just want to go home and they don’t live too far away.” On average, Benedict said he is tipped $5-$6 for rides that average about a quarter mile, although a particularly generous customer once gave him $100. Benedict operates his taxi Thursday through Saturday, starting around midnight. On any given night, he’ll give 20-40 rides with two or three people riding in his cab at a time. Aimee Ryder, an interdisciplinary studies in social science and human resources and society senior, rode in the pedicab for the first time this winter. “It was something I always wanted to do before I graduated,” she said, “We had left from the bar, Rick’s (American Café). We were going to our house.” Ryder said the blanket Benedict includes in the cab to keep passengers warm and his willingness to take photos of her and her friends made the ride that much better. Benedict’s relationship with bicycles began when his truck was destroyed and he began using a bicycle as a primary mode of transportation. This, he said, was when he realized the power of bicycles. For Benedict, his pedicab is more than a job — it also is a way to demonstrate his desire to reduce dependence on automobiles and congestion. “I am doing it kind of for the money, but not really,” Benedict said. “It’s just very enjoyable, meeting new people and if they enjoy the ride and if these things can grow, that’s what I’m looking for — like something where I can contribute to East Lansing a little bit.” Benedict’s pedicab weighs in at 185 pounds. The giant tricycle can hold three passengers, has 21 gears, disc breaks, turning signals and brake lights. Brandished on the back of the pedicab’s chassis is a painting of a tiger, a symbol that Benedict chose, he said, because “it gives it strength.” Benedict sees the future of pedicabs and that of the East Lansing and MSU communities as intertwined. Aside from being environmentally friendly, to Benedict, bicycle taxis could contribute to the area’s “flavor.” “I do know MSU and East Lansing are definitely looking for new ways to stimulate the city as well,” Benedict said. “This would just be something to help stimulate a little of it. Give it something new, something different.”

UPDATED: Proposed Law to Limit Pedicabs; Ordinance Threatens Industry, Operators Say | ... - 0 views

  • “It isn’t like a cab,” he explained. Rickshaw drivers are at the whim of the weather, the seasons and generally do not operate late at night or early in the morning. However, insurance companies are rating the operators like taxi cab drivers.

Have to get set with a bicycle insurance company FIRST!!
  • His company leases the bikes to individual operators for a flat rate. The operators then cruise areas popular with tourists and others offering rides.

Pedicab operators say ordinance would hobble biz. -- Britannica Online Encyclopedia - 0 views

  • Chicago Rickshaw owns 20 pedicabs, which it rents to drivers. Those pedicabs now can display ads at a rate of about $150 per day, per vehicle — "real money I can count on," Ms. Samuels says. "The legislation they have proposed can easily put us out of business in a matter of months." The proposed ad ban is about public safety, says Norma Reyes, commissioner of the city's Department of Business Affairs.and Consumer Protection. The city ordinance would require pedicabs to display a rate card, license number and the pedicab company's name and phone number. "I don't think there's space there that will accommodate all the things that are going to be required," Ms. Reyes says.

Weichong Victory Taiwan Pedicab ~ Vintage Child's Passenger Pedicab Model V999 Circa 19... - 1 views

  •
It is indeed incredible to find a vintage Taiwan pedicab in the remarkable state of preservation as is this one. Even more incredible ~ this is a very rare child's model with the original catalog flyer. Brought back by educators returning from teaching in Taipei, Taiwan in the early 1960's it has been keep indoors away from the elements that have deteriorated and destroyed most pedicabs of this vintage. This was a street legal pedicab that still retains it's Taipei Taiwan license tag. This is "Children Passenger Pedicab" model V999 measuring approximately 72" long x 30" wide x 46" tall. Weight taken from the catalog is 56 Kgs, or about 123 pounds. We could find no record of the business who sold the pedicab, Taiwan Pedicabs, Pedicab Service Center, 145, Sec. 1, Roosevelt Road, Taipei, Taiwan. The frame has the manufacturer name of Weichong pressed into the metal and the oval nameplate shows the model name as Victory (see photos). Since this has been kept indoors it is in remarkable condition with few significant issues. There is a damaged area on the side of the pedicab (see photos) that measures approximately 4" wide x 5" high which could be improved in the hands of a competent restorer. Smaller surface dings and minor losses are present but not extremely distracting. The chain is off and needs a link added, an there is about a 1-1/2" wide strip of the rubber matt on the floor that has come off. This was used by the children of the teachers, so expect signs of use and wear commensurate with age. Even so, it is so exciting to find a child's pedicab in this original condition. Tires are hard rubber. The bell sounds great! This child's model is pictured in the second page on the catalog, first picture top left.
