Their study will be of particular interest to K-12 administrators of online courses.       I say Prezi is a great resource! I had a hard time in the beginning as I was thinking in terms of powerpoint, but once I got the hang of it, I loved it. Students have a great time with it as well. They love creating Prezis.

      I agree, my 8th grade students really prefered to use this presentation tool after they got the hang of it. I suggest giving students plenty of time to play around with the program before requiring them to use it.

Mobile Live Video Streaming: Best Tools To Broadcast Yourself From Your Mobile Phone - Robin Good's Latest News - 0 views

  • You must have a compatible mobile phone: Go to the "supported phones" page on the site of the tool you want to use and check that your phone model and brand are listed as fully supported. Don't do this with your standard mobile phone data plan: When you broadcast video from your mobile you are effectively sending lots of data, and if you are not aware of this, you may find some nasty surprise in your mobile phone bill at the end of the month. Best thing to do is to get a cost-effective data plan such as an unlimited "flat" rate would be ideal. Here in Italy I use the data-only plan offered by 3 which costs me eu19/month for 5GB of traffic weekly. I am very happy with this solution both from a technical and cost-effective viewpoint. Consider that when you live stream at the highest quality level allowed today by these services, you produce an outgoing data stream of about 400Kbps. That is equivalent to roughly to 3MB per minute. So do some math against your mobile provider data costs before you start testing with this stuff. Get a second battery: Do some tests and see how much battery your mobile phone uses while live streaming. In my experience mobile phones drain down batteries in record time, requiring you to have at least one spare charged extra battery everytime you want to do something serious with it.

      The iterative process mentioned here is at the heart of the matter. Online teachers who design their own courses, or at least have the option to revise exisiting material can participate in a process of continuous revision based on formative feedback from participants.
  • A while back I posted the entry Article Notice: Tips, Tools, And Techniques For Teaching In The Online High School Classroom, after seeing the item scroll through my RSS reader.
  • The article essentially reports the results of a case study – a multi-site case study.  The sites in question included a public online high school, an online charter school, and an online consortium of seven rural school districts combined with one community college (or so we are told in the first paragraph of the article).

  • The article continues with some discussion of the issues raised in the previous article and relevant literature, and then concludes with a list of ten “best practices.”
  • Data from only the teachers with no verification of whether the teachers actually do the things that they say they do (and we have a fairly good body of research to tell us that teachers often believe they are doing things one way, but when observed they do things quite differently).
  • No verification of whether what the teachers say is effective actually makes a difference by actually asking the student their opinion or using student data and trying to correlate that with teacher actions.  Does anyone else see a problem with this?
  • I suspect Kerr’s “best practices” were exactly what they had in mind and one of the worse things us academics have done to educational practitioner – make them believe that with an extremely limited and skewed sample we can generate a list of things that they should be doing that “have been found to work.”  And please don’t think I’m blaming practitioners in this entry, I’m not.  I’m blaming us academics.
  • The bottom line is that Barbour (2007), DiPietro et al. (2008) an Kerr (2010) are at best methodologically limited case studies.  The results of which can’t be generalized beyond the context that they have occurred.  At worse they are simply methodologically flawed studies that mislead practitioners into believing that they provide some kind of manual to be followed.
  • Let’s not forget that the Means et al. report also concluded: “Despite what appears to be strong support for [online and] blended learning applications, the studies in this meta-analysis do not demonstrate that online learning is superior as a medium.” And within the educational technology literature, there is a long standing belief that studying the effects of the delivery medium is akin to studying the effect a delivery truck has on the food it carries.
  • I usually summarize his thesis by paraphrasing a well known political axiom from my favourite Cajun, James Carville, “It’s the pedagogy, stupid.”
  • “Barbour and Reeves (2009) went even further in their discussion of how future research into K-12 online learning should be conducted. These authors recommended a design research approach. Design research is “a systematic but flexible methodology aimed to improve educational practice through iterative analysis, design, development, and implementation, based on collaboration among researchers and practitioners in real-world settings, and leading to contextually sensitive design principles and theories” (Wang & Hannafin, 2005, pp. 6-7). Essentially, researchers work with practitioners to both identify a problem that needs to be addressed and to create a possible solution. That solution is implemented and data are collected. The data are used to refine the solution and the process is repeated. This continues until the solution addresses the original problem, and a theory is generated to explain why it works. Unlike traditional methodologies of educational research, the goal is not to generalize the findings to other contexts, but to work with those who are part of the research site to solve their problems. As a methodology, design research has been particularly welcomed by the K-12 education community, who have become accustomed to a team of researchers descending upon their school to implement one of the latest and greatest ideas, which works wonderfully as long as the research team is in place, but as soon as the funding is gone and the research team leaves, the staff revert back to the way they have always done things.

He holds a Master of Science in Education degree in Instructional Technology, and is a certified Project Management Professional, Java Programmer and Statistical Analysis System Programmer. This work was written in 2009 when Qualls was Vice-president of Curriculum and Instruction at Caliber Data Training. He shares "lessons learned" from the endeavor with online course designers, and begins by describing the process of developing an ILT course for a Caliber Data Training client to train staff on the use of new software. After using the course in a face-to-face environment for a year, the client decides to convert the training to e-learning using Macromedia Captivate. According to Qualls, "Many factors contributed to the success of this effort, or might otherwise have contributed to its failure." The "many factors" are addressed by asking and answering sixteen (16) questions regarding the "conversion effort". Questions include: Does the course already exist in ILT format?; Is the person doing the conversion already familiar with the ILT course?; What is the approval process-Who will sign off on the project?; How will learning be measured?; and Is the person doing the conversion familiar with the e-learning software-Does the person doing the conversion have prior experience with similar projects?. The article concludes with "benefits of e-learning" which considers training time and documentation; and "cost of conversion" which considers labor invested. The author does a comprehensive job of breaking down the elements involved in moving from traditional to online learning.

    In this Journal Article Peterson and Palmer (Dr. Sharon Peterson and Dr. Louann Bierlein Palmer, both from the Educational Leadership, Research and Technology Department, Western Michigan Univeristy) studied / researched (future instructors) students, in an undergraduate university educational technology course (EDT 3470), to discover which educational setting influenced (i.e. face-2-face computer lab vs. online classes); an increase in their technology proficiency and problem solving. The article includes 5 years of supporting data, which reveals results comparing technology skills and their competency for integrating technology into their classes. As well as supporting data for the overall use of problem solving skills between the students in the face-2-face modality and the online modality.
