MOOC Mess - 6 views

  •
Unfortunately, I was one of the students in this course. I was curious to see how this course would compare to some of the courses I'd taken at UW-Stout in e-learning and online teaching (content wise). From the start I felt like the course was very difficult in its instruction to students and it went down hill from there. It seemed as if the instructor was trying to fit the same methodology for a course with 40 students to a course 40,000. I'm certain there are many lessons to be learned. Looking at the bright side, it's likely that some research may come from this debacle and there will be improvements in the methodology of instruction for MOOCs. Currently, a MOOC course feels more like an online self-directed training course rather than an academic course with all the bells, whistles and ENGAGEMENT of a really well designed online experience.

Assessment 2.0 - 6 views

  •
This is a really good article discussing Assessment in the age of Web2.0. Though its a little old (2007) the ideas are still valid. How long do we hang on to the culture of Assessment 1.0? The digital generation, most significantly social media, is sustainable and is a key part in lifelong learning. Thus, we need a model that looks at how "we" assess teaching and learning in this environment.

The tantalizing vision of universal access to the cultural and scientific heritage of humanity seemed close to fulfillment in 2008, when Google announced the settlement of a class-action lawsuit charging that its Google Book Search project infringed copyright by scanning in-copyright books from major research-library collections.

This tool is excellent for digital storytelling and other activities. Using Thornburg's metaphors (see David D. Thornburg: Campfires in Cyberspace: Primordial Metaphors for Learning in the 21st Century (Original text 2001)) this tool has a use around the metaphorical campfire as a storytelling tool, around the watering hole as a casual discussion on current events, and in the cave as a reflective tool.
