I can't believe only half said they do this.
  • growing frustration among students that they have to “power down” their use of technology when they enter school buildings.
  • Outside of school, about half the 140,000 middle and high school students who participated in the survey reported using e-mail, instant-messaging tools, and text messages to communicate with classmates about homework, and the same number said they used social-networking Web sites to collaborate with their peers on school projects.

My high school principal shared this article with the faculty, and it sheds light on the way some students feel hampered whant trying to use technology in school. It offers some student insight and some surprising issues. Students don't use technology to communicate with others about homework as often as I thought. Also, students are well-aware of budgetary constraints.

This article helps explain why we need to use more technology in the classroom.

This web site provides excellent educational resources for clinical laboratory students.

The resources I am sharing here are not necessarily directly related to online work or teaching - but they are resources I use on a regular basis and they could easily be incorporated into teaching clinical laboratory students. I'm also using them as a way to learn to use diigo.

This site is a reference for teachers wanting to have students create and maintain portfolios of their work in an electronic environment. The site author, Helen Barrett, has compiled a variety of web links for different aspects of e-portfolio design, with the aim of allowing the user to create e-portfolios using free resources on the web.

I love it when someone has already done a lot of work for me - and this site is a good example. There are lots of links to tutorials and tools to help educators work with students on e-portfolio creation.

I feel that wikispaces offers more options for free than other online blog/wiki applications. I am able to host more pages and users than in PBWorks. Permissions can be set independently by page. These options are important to me since I am trying to build more collaboration of students across grade levels. I could delete student pages when they leave me to go to the high school, but isn't it way cooler that their info and account lives on so they can still participate? With the easy management tools, I can easily make sure everyone's contributions are on the "up and up". ;)

Great site for students to create online Wikis. A colleague has used it to have students create review materials for AP exams.

A colleague has used this site to have students create review materials for AP exams and I am going to try it this year with my AP Psychology class. I have had students use Wikis on my class Moodle page and they seem to like the collaborative aspect of it because they don't feel overwhelmed by the workload.

Google Tips - 0 views

  • The problem that many teachers face when having students create user accounts for web applications is that most applications require a valid e-mail address to create the account. There is a solution that I learned from Alice Mercer about harnessing Gmail to create "fake" accounts that applications will recognize as legitimate.
