This is a terrific tool for music students (especially to those studying music theory) that allows them to use a high-quality music notation program that exists completely in the Cloud.  A basic Noteflight account is completely free and rivals the capabilities of expensive programs such as Finale and Sibelius for basic notation and playback.

This one is very specific to what I do as a music teacher--but I still think it's a great example of the power of the cloud for sharing ideas.

Free online suite of high power media tools. They 'look great'. Haven't had a moment to try them out. Quite sophisticated, they may be more than you need. I did view the demo for their Audio Editor and it's slick. You could create simple podcasts with it no problem, but you'd be using just a smidgen of the toolset available.

  • make it simple, and make it beautiful.

For students, the "make it simple" part means they won't come to you with millions of "how to" questions. For teachers, the "make it beautiful" part means that it will be neat and efficient to assess.

Music To The Mind - Activating Human Potential - AGE OF AUTISM - 0 views

  • Georgi Lozanov, a Bulgarian psychologist, developed a new learning and teaching method, Suggestopedia, in the 1960's which makes much use of barok music for relaxation and so-called 'concert readings'. Often used for foreign language learning, the method was examined and proven to be effective by UNESCO in the 1970's.
  • Dr. Alfred Tomatis, a French otolaryngologist, described in a book published in 1991 how certain pieces of Mozart music promote the development of the brain. The results of a scientific investigation into the 'Mozart Effect' were published in Nature in 1993, showing that listening to Mozart's Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major temporarily increased IQ scores by 8 to 9 points in specific spatial-temporal tasks.
  • Auditory Integration Training (AIT), which has found many followers in the USA. A study at the University of Illinois found significant decreases in epileptiform activity in 23 of 29 patients with epilepsy after listening for just 5 minutes to that same Mozart music.

Creative Commons helps people to share what they have created in an appropriate and legal way. It also makes finding and using creative content legally easier.

    Copyright permission
  •
Allows users to easily incorporate selected copyright notice into materials they create. Helps with questions of copyright but allows information to be used freely. Also has materials others have created and placed in CC.
  •
I like this as a way to enter into the conversation about copyright laws and web content. There are a number of "life in the digital world" aspects that we tend to ignore or avoid in education due to their complexities and our own ignorance. This is a great vehicle to take us into that realm of discussion.

Check out the sample to see what can be done. This will allow students to put together polished pieces from unedited video and/or still images. This will shorten the time it takes for students to put together presentations and increase the quality.

I have seen middle school students make amazing videos with this tool. The only problem is that the 30 seconds limit is too short for many students and schools don't have funds to pay for the longer video.

Maybe some of you know that you can apply for free premium accounts for your class for free. I had kids write original "If" poems, based on the poem by Rudyard Kipling, add photos, and music from Soundaboundz, uploaded both tracks to Garageband and then uploaded to animoto. One of my student's creations was an "IF poem about his dad, which he used as a gift for Father's Day. The student's family was blown away. Was actually one of my highlights for the year.

    Creative.

I think this is a great example of creativity. I spoke with a musi teacher at a conference 2 years ago who did something similar. Each student played and recorded a piece of music on their instrument. They then sent it to their instructor who pieced it together. The band played a piece of music together without ever being in the same room! Very cool.

Open source software for recording and editing oral activities in the online delivery of FL instruction. Students download it and can record oral activities and saved them. They can also upload it to a CMS to share with peers and instructor. It is important to remember to save in a format that will be recognizable. Students can create a single project by adding and editing different individual files in a single one.

Audacity is an awesome (and free) tool for basic recording, editing, and playback. I use it to record my choral rehearsals, record individual singers during private lessons, and create practice tracks that can be posted online so students can learn and/or reinforce their part in a piece of music we are rehearsing in class. The interface is relatively simple and the options for the music classroom (or even the general education classroom) are numerous!
