The grade 5 teachers at my school facilitate the use of Glogster by students to create fantastic online growth portfolios for our end-of-year student led conferences. I did not know how this tool worked till I linked to it through the Discovery Education site. Now that I have previewed it, I can see many future applications of it at my school.

Alexander, the Google Good to Know You site is terrific. I've never seen it before. I like the short videos that explain technical terms and concepts like IP addresses and cookies. I recommend this site to all! It's a good way too understand the concepts of Internet safety and data security. It will also help build our technical vocabulary!

Campfires in Cyberspace: Primordial Metaphors for Learning in the 21st Century - 0 views

  • The craft of multimedia design is not a linear mix of writing, image creation, sound composition, and selective placement of "button clicks" to advance to the next page. It is, instead, the storyteller's craft writ large — a new medium of expression whose ideas cannot be captured or presented in any other medium. We are experiencing the birth pains of this new craft, and it promises to be a noisy baby.
  • when the user can craft a personal pathway through the content, even if the material is already in place, this freedom of true interactivity supports the creation of unique ways to resolve the conflict established at the start of the story. Interactivity of this type is rewarding at many levels. It facilitates creativity and the development of thinking skills by the participant in the journey through story space.
  • True interactivity provides, at the minimum, the capacity to branch to different scenarios, to gather additional information, to take new twists and turns and, when very well done, to explore avenues never anticipated by the creator of the program.

I like this as a way to enter into the conversation about copyright laws and web content. There are a number of "life in the digital world" aspects that we tend to ignore or avoid in education due to their complexities and our own ignorance. This is a great vehicle to take us into that realm of discussion.
