Research under the New Dynamics of Ageing programme will impact on policy decisions and scientific, technology and design choices that will make sure that older people will enjoy better quality lives. We are passionate about supporting people to realise the benefits of using technology. Everything we do is geared towards achieving that, whether it's through giving individual learners access to great online content and support, or working with those who then inspire and teach others to use technology. We don't believe that people have to use technology. But we would like everyone to have the opportunity to, and we would also like everyone to have accurate, easy to understand information and about what they might find useful and why.

"At 2012 Q1, 8.12 million adults (16.1 per cent) had never used the Internet. This is about 1 per cent lower than 2011 Q4 and 7 per cent lower than 2011 Q1 There were 42.16 million adults (83.7 per cent) who had ever used the Internet at 2012 Q1 Men (86.1 per cent) were more likely to be Internet users than women (81.3 per cent) By region, the South East had the highest rate of Internet users (86.9 per cent); Northern Ireland was the lowest (75.1 per cent)"

"Using classifications that show sparse areas of England, some topics, such as incomes and qualifications, show 'two countrysides' - a better off, less sparse and more accessible one, and a less populous and isolated sparse countryside. Patterns within urban areas often differ, with the most urban areas of England frequently showing different trends from those in other places, and the widest variations."

"DIGITAL TUESDAYS creates vibrant digital communities around public libraries.  The scheme began in 2011 and is currently running three strands. These are the DIGITAL BAZAAR®    - runner up at the prestigious 2012 CILIP Libraries Change Lives Awards (next one Saturday 10th November);  DTvip for visually impaired people (VIPs) and  screenings of films with local interest. Our most recent screening was  UTOPIA LONDON on Tuesday 6th March 2012.  Other strands  will be developed in 2012, alongside special events like DESIGN PHILANTHROPY, a collaboration with the Royal College of Art (exhibition/presentation November 2011)."

Helping communities tackle social and digital exclusion.

"One in three of us who live to 65 will have some form of dementia before we die. A million people in the UK will be living with the condition by 2021. But there's a difference between simply living and living well. The Design Council in partnership with the Department of Health has funded and supported the development of five innovative new design solutions to improve the quality of life for people living with dementia."

"Independence Matters is a joint collaboration between the Technology Strategy Board and Design Council to support the development of great consumer services for later life.   Through the programme we've funded seven start up enterprises who have used design-led approaches to develop innovative services that help older adults live well and stay independent. "This post follows on from my last one about setting up an ipad for my father-in-law who is a stroke survivor (so will make more sense if you read that first).  I received some lovely good wishes and interest so I wanted to provide an update."
