In the Web 2.0 world, self-directed learners must be adept at building and sustaining networks.

Some college professors and campus services are using Twitter simply because it is a mode of direct communication with students that is reliable and fast. Those who use the technology to communicate directly with students note that they can receive responses in minutes rather than the hours it would take using e-mail or blogs. Additionally, this kind of technology is now being integrated into course management systems.

From March 27th to March 29th, 2009 - the education community of Second Life will be hosting a 3 day conference on best practices in education. This conference will promote the best and brightest from the Second Life education community in various fields of practice including everything from demonstrations to hands on theory. Calls for papers will be starting January 19th with a submission deadline no later than March 6th, 2009. Watch this space for more details. All articles will be peer reviewed. Papers accepted for the conference will be published in the Journal for Virtual Studies. Volunteers to help organize and run the conference are being accepted now. Free software for collecting multimedia resources and links, I am using this to build a new Earth science 11 program. Freepath lends itself so well to enabling my students (who work individually) to engage in the joy of self-directed discovery within the parameters of a structured learning package because they will be able to maneuver around my collection of multimedia materials, worksheets, readings, and links non-sequentially -- following their interests and going where their curiosity takes them, but will still have to come back to the framework and fulfill the expectations of the unit.
