Second Life™ "Discovery" of SHARKS! « Common.Sensible - 0 views

  • A long-time huge supporter of educational effort is the Discovery Channel. Among my favorite stations. The Discovery Channel and also found itself embracing Second Life in a big way with regard to their educational effort and so, they often team-up Second Life activities in conjunction with their television programming, which I personally feel is brilliant! It started with teaming up their web properties with whatever is going on regarding the television schedule. Now, mix-in Second Life and you can experience Shark Week like you never have before, scuba gear included! Spend a little quality television time on the Discovery Channel during ‘Shark Week’, learn more about it all at the Discovery Channel web site, then take a peek at the Discovery Education Network web and plop in-world to actually experience a bit of what you learn.

50 Things Everyone Should Know How To Do - 0 views

  •
Self-reliance is a vital key to living a healthy, productive life. To be self-reliant one must master a basic set of skills, more or less making them a jack of all trades. Contrary to what you may have learned in school, a jack of all trades is far more equipped to deal with life than a specialized master of only one.

What items, for example, would you put in a box to describe your life; the life of a Victorian Servant or Roman soldier; or to show that slavery was wrong and unnecessary? You can display anything from a text file to a movie. You can also view and comment on the museum boxes submitted by others Shared by Kathy Walker with the following note: "Attached is a cool idea for projects & assessments that can be used with any subject area."

Making Compassion the Fifth C of Learning - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
The question of what learning matters most to our students is one that I return to regularly. A fascinating range of models are available each with similar elements but presented in a slightly different manner. Most could be summarised by the 'Four C's' model outlined in 'Most Likely to Succeed' by Tony Wagner and Ted Dintersmith. Critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity are vital and each plays an important role in allowing us to manage the complexity of modern day life. Beyond being relevant to success in the classroom the Four C's are the foundations of life-long learning but I question if alone they are enough. I believe we must include a fifth; compassion.

Becoming Learners: Making time for OUR Learning - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
At the heart of all that we do as teachers lies the act of learning. Our hope is that our actions inspire our students to engage in a process that results in their acquisition of new knowledge, mastery of new skills and the development of capacities and dispositions which will prepare them for life beyond our classrooms. Increasingly our focus is on developing the skills and dispositions our students require to become life-long learners. We recognise that in a rapidly changing world, the capacity to take charge of your personal learning journey, to become self-navigating learners is essential.

Rethinking Time to see Education as a Lifelong Journey - Lessons from Blueback - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
Blueback is a beautiful metaphor for life and particularly of the life we live in schools. When looked at close up, with an eye on the details, the experience of school is one of passing and recurring cycles. When looked at from a distance, with an eye on the whole, there are elements of constancy, the throughlines which bring meaning to our experience and which have as their consequence the residuals of education.
