One to One Computing Blueprint - 0 views

  •
The Stillwater Area Public Schools began their laptop initiative in November of 2003. At that time, each teacher at Stillwater Junior High School (SJHS) and Oak-Land Junior High School (OLJHS) received a laptop and began a program of professional development focused on increasing teachers' knowledge and skills related to using the laptops and integrating technology into their curriculum. Students at both schools received laptops in the spring of 2004. High school students had their own laptop in a one-to-one program that allowed computers to be taken home. The junior high used mobile laptop carts, offering a 3:1 student-to-laptop ratio. Both schools made wireless Internet access available throughout their buildings and offered students and parents online access to course assignments and grades.

Step 1: give every kid a laptop. Step 2: learning begins? - 16 views

  • The state program works with teachers to change their lesson plans appropriately; the goal is to get students to think critically and engage with all subjects through creative work. "Since our beginnings, we've always looked at notions of creation," Mao said. "It's not about consumption of content, it's about the creation of knowledge."
  • making a laptop program effective is only 10 or 20 percent about the hardware itself, with the rest being about making sure the teachers know how to use them and how to lead students to proper learning goals
  • Bolting old lesson plans to new computers will do little, but future programs with strong teacher buy-in and excellent institutional support have the potential to do much more.
  •
Countries considering "one-to-one" laptop programs might also compare the OLPC experiences to a different program in Maine. At present, this northeastern state distributes a MacBook to every middle school student and to about half of high school students, for a total of over 70,000 laptops.

I want to give poor children computers and walk away - opinion - 14 December 2011 - New Scientist - 6 views

  • A pre-pilot will start on 1 January 2012. Pre-pilot means that it will be small and there will be modest human intervention just to see children's reactions in order to better design the real, hands-off, dropping-out-of-the-sky format.
  •
Can tablet computers "parachuted" into remote areas transform childhood learning, asks Nicholas Negroponte .. One Laptop per Child (OLPC), even after giving out nearly 3 million Laptops, is still criticised along the following lines: "Negroponte believes that you can give a child a Laptop and walk away." Whether I ever believed that or not is now secondary. It became such a refrain that I finally asked myself about a year ago: "What if you could?"

  • While some professors seek to exclude the devices from the classroom, others are creating multimedia-rich curricula in which students can draw on online resources and interact with each other. Banning laptops is just plain wrong, according to Don Krug, associate professor at UBC’s department of curriculum studies. He says students are adults, and the best a professor can hope for is a “respectful learning environment,” where students limit their own behaviour. “If they really want to learn the information, they will. They’re paying a lot of money,” he says. “We’re better off teaching them how to be responsible learners.”

I find this to be a bit of an overstatement.
    • Russ Goerend

I agree, Gary. If she couldn't teach effectively without them, she may want to refocus on her pedagogy.
  • more innovatively.
  • You need ideas about how to enhance the curriculum with technology.
    • Gary Cordray

Yes I do. Especially in AP.
    • Stephanie Meurer

I agree...While I don't want technology to overtake my classroom, I do want to engage students as much as possible, and I'll use technolgy when it's easy to manage/use and effective.

I feel that our plan right now is to throw a bunch of software applications and hardware at us and let us figure it all out. Not working for me. I need to take one thing at a time and really learn it before I can use it in my classroom.

If you click on the link just 2 lines below this highlight ('over here') there are clues on how to use wikis in teaching. In Chemical Education, we have been investigating using these both to teach and to build an online living text. 10 years after laptops come to Maine schools, educators say technology levels playing field for students | State - 73 views

  • We have math teachers doing online skill-based type of things and online quizzes,” Robinson said. Students use a site called, Glogster where they create digital posters, and upload photos and music for reports.
    • Steve Ransom

Pretty low-level use for math... there are so many more powerful things that laptops could be used for.
  • Having laptops means all students can do the same quality report, regardless of their parents' income, “because they all have the same tools,”
  • We tried filtering. It's a losing battle,” Robinson said. “There's always a way around it. Now our approach is teaching responsibility.”

One Year Later: Assessing the Impact of iPads on Education - iPads in Education - 136 views

  •
Mobile digital devices rocketed to popularity around 10 years ago with the release of the iPod. Mobile computing went mainstream with the release of the iPhone in 2007. With the release of the iPad just one year ago, we are now seeing a significant shift in the dynamics of computer purchase and practice - moving away from desktops and laptops to iPads and other mobile devices. Their cost relative to laptops along with the promise of mobile computing has raised tremendous interest in iPad use in education.
