Youth Carbon Footprint Calculator

Behavioral Institute for Children and Adolescents has been promoting improved services for troubled children and youth since 1982. The Institute provides a wide variety of supporting services to professionals and parents who work with children with emotional and behavioral challenges.

Raises questions about  the "Hole in the Wall" effort to provide computer access to urban youth in India.  Important to interrogate the actual success of such projects.

This summer, major advocates for the potential of the Internet - including the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Mozilla, the National Writing Project, and others - are putting Connected Learning into practice. The Summer of Making and Connecting organizes hundreds of events, projects and programs in communities across the nation, around the world, and online to help youth connect learning to their interests and to enable teachers to learn from and network with their innovative peers.

Teaching world cultures and global issues through film for student in grades 6-12. Films have lesson plans that are common core aligned. "Journeys in Film believes that helping America's youth develop a worldview with global understanding should be a primary 21st century educational goal."

Preparing today's youth to solve tomorrow's greatest problems is not something any one person, community or corporation can do alone. Non-profit organizations and the hands-on learning opportunities they provide are often the catalyst that sparks a young person's lifelong exploration of science, technology, engineering and math.

iEARN (International Education and Resource Network) iEARN is a non-profit organization made up of over 30,000 schools and youth organizations in more than 130 countries. iEARN empowers teachers and young people to work together online using the Internet and other new communications technologies. Over 2,000,000 students each day are engaged in collaborative project work worldwide.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: This is a graded internship that allows you to integrate your own coursework with a hands-on service learning experience. The central objective of this course is to provide students with community experiences and reflection opportunities that examine community needs, the importance of civic engagement, and social justice issues affecting ethnic minorities and marginalized populations in contemporary American society. Students dedicate 70 hours at a pre-approved site (including Title I K-12 schools, youth programs, health services, social services, environmental programs, government agencies, etc.) directly serving a population in need or supporting activities that contribute to the greater good of our community. A weekly seminar, course readings, discussions, and reflection assignments facilitate critical thinking and a deeper understanding of cultural diversity, citizenship, and how to contribute to positive social change in our community. The course is also designed to provide "real-world" experiences that exercise academic skills and knowledge applicable to each student‟s program of study and career exploration. STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Student will be introduced to essential skills associated with their baccalaureate studies to actively serve the local community. While completing this in-depth study of cultural diversity, citizenship and social justice issues facing our community, students will gain an understanding of the value of Social Embeddedness and the importance of incorporating civic engagement into their collegiate careers, as they strive to become civically engaged students. Students will be introduced to inequalities, discrimination, and other community issues facing ethnic minorities and marginalized populations, as well as the correlation with greater societal issues. INTERNSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES:  Service hours - 70 hours of community outreach (spread throughout the semester in which you are enrolled in the course)

Education for black youths

I'm starting a lunchtime knitting/crochet club for my students this year and came along this wonderful program to help with the cost. This program donates supplies for mentors who would like to start a program to teach needle arts. Article concerning consumerism and our kids

The biggest take-away for me was that adults were largely lacking presence in the online life of youth. And, even though this was less true for tweens, the focus was primarily on consequences for poor choices, not digital citizenship. For me, this reflects a larger cultural shift that is occurring and the continued blurring of ethics/morality and the destructive influence of Hollywood.
