It's prospective parent information day, and you make the trek to San Francisco's South of Market neighborhood. You walk up to the second floor of the school, file into a glass-walled conference room overlooking a classroom, and take a seat alongside dozens of other parents who, like you, feel that public schools-with their endless bubble-filled tests, 38-kid classrooms, and antiquated approach to learning-just aren't cutting it. At the same time, you're thinking: this school is kind of weird. On one side of the glass is a cheery little scene, with two teachers leading two different middle school lessons on opposite ends of the room. But on the other side is something altogether unusual: an airy and open office with vaulted ceilings, sunlight streaming onto low-slung couches, and rows of hoodie-wearing employees typing away on their computers while munching on free snacks from the kitchen. And while you can't quite be sure, you think that might be a robot on wheels roaming about. Then there's the guy who's standing at the front of the conference room, the school's founder. Dressed in the San Francisco standard issue t-shirt and jeans, he's unlike any school administrator you've ever met. Thanks Irene! The students did such an amazing job. You really don't have to be tech-saavy to employ this in your classroom. The software is already so user-friendly. The person who taught me how to do this was an English teacher - she would use it with poetry, so that students would have to emphasize emotion in their reading. Very effective!

Jennifer, this is wonderful! I love how you give your students choices of which app to use and how you place the onus on them to learn it and to troubleshoot on their own. This is something that I teach in my computer classes because students have to acquire and feel comfortable with that skill. Thanks!

Digital publishing tools for creating story books

This is an excellent PBS video describing the needs and strategies for educating children to prepare them to function in the 21st century.

I have to say, I watched this when it aired, and it was infuriating to me. Like most educators, I get really excited when there is talk of tech in the classroom. This video does not have a counter-argument. What I got from it was, "Hey, look at all of this cool stuff these schools are doing." I am ready for schools to take this approach. I am ready to go for it. However, I would like to see a documentary on the numerous hurdles to having education like this in the other 99.9% of public schools. Some of these schools get to hand-pick students, or are on a lottery system. How about the cost? Or the professional development? Or the inequity in public school funding? With a couple exceptions, all I could see were dollar signs when I watched this. Money that is not there, and won't be for some time. If you want to feel behind the times, inadequate about your teaching/pedagogy, or flat out jealous, this is the video for you.
