Evaluating the Electronic Portfolio - 184 views

  •
Evaluating the Electronic PortfolioIn reviewing the electronic portfolios that are produced, it is important to establish different expectation levels for development. The Electron is round. Incredibly round | ZME Science - 59 views

  • The experiments, which spanned more than a decade, suggest that the electron differs from being round by less than 0.000000000000000000000000001 cm. Just so you can get an estimate, if the electron were as big as the solar system, it would still be spherical to within the width of a human hair.
  • a team from the Imperial College London concluded that the electron is actually incredibly round, thus making the most accurate estimate of its shape.

Effects of electronic outlining on students' argumentative writing performance - de Sme... - 1 views

  •
This study examined the effect of electronic outlining on the quality of students' writing products and how outlining affects perceived mental effort during the writing task. Additionally, it was studied how students appropriate and appreciate an outline tool and whether they need explicit instruction in order to engage in planning. To answer these questions, the writing products and self-report data from 34 tenth-grade students of a Dutch pre-university school were analysed. Students wrote two similar argumentative texts with or without an outline tool. Results show that electronic outlining improves the quality of students' argumentative texts and decreases mental effort. Answers to a retrospective questionnaire showed that a short instruction on the outline tool was sufficient for students to understand its working and that most students experienced the tool as beneficial. Finally, results indicate that without specific instruction on text planning, students hardly devote any time to this important aspect of writing.

Physicists uncover novel phase of matter - 22 views

  •
A team of physicists led by Caltech's David Hsieh has discovered an unusual form of matter-not a conventional metal, insulator, or magnet, for example, but something entirely different. This phase, characterized by an unusual ordering of electrons, offers possibilities for new electronic device functionalities and could hold the solution to a long-standing mystery in condensed matter physics having to do with high-temperature superconductivity-the ability for some materials to conduct electricity without resistance, even at "high" temperatures approaching -100 degrees Celsius.

Using Technology as Our Teacher - US News and World Report - 0 views

  •
But how can we identify a potentially good teacher? How can average teachers become better teachers? The secretary's special funding could make a crucial difference by financing a national program exploiting the electronic miracles of the Internet and video. We could escape geography by using the technology to have the best teachers appear in hundreds of thousands of disparate classrooms. This is a force multiplier. The classrooms would be equipped with a large, flat-screen monitor with whiteboards on either side; the monitor would be connected to a school server that contains virtually all of the lessons for every subject taught in the school, from kindergarten through 12th grade. The contents would use animation, video, dramatization, and presentation options to deliver complete lessons, to convey ideas in unique ways that are now unavailable in conventional classrooms. The classroom teachers would play the role of enhancers, answering questions and helping students better understand the material covered electronically; they'd pause the presentation to ask questions and to prompt critical thinking. The whiteboard would be the platform for student involvement.

Teaching with tablets: Will our children be using electronic textbooks to learn? | ITPr... - 0 views

  • Ever the technology pacesetter, South Korea announced earlier this year that it's committed to replacing paper textbooks with digital versions in classrooms within just three years – and that means tablet computers.
  • There is clearly caution about the use of tablets (72 per cent of schools want more evidence before adopting), but there is unstoppable enthusiasm; 82 per cent of teachers said their pupils had an interest in using tablets. Whether or not children are familiar with tablets and their touchscreen ilk isn’t doubted. Around 2.8 million children already have a smartphone, including almost a million – that's about a quarter – of eight to 12 year olds.
