6 Ways To Make Online Education More Inviting | Edudemic - 92 views

  • The most popular complaints about online learning are lack of engagement, slow response time from the instructor, and a loss of the sense of community.
  • Anxiety is the enemy of learning. Students need to know their teacher, environment, and peers. In a virtual environment, you can only rely on your user interface to do this for you.

Higher Ed's Ultimate Guide To Cloud Computing - Edudemic - 8 views

  • Drilling down a bit more, Google has revealed that more than half of those schools involved with cloud computing are either using or considering Google Apps. Currently, 62 of the US News and World Report’s top 100 Universities are using Google Apps for Education.
  •
Higher education is jumping into the cloud with both feet. According to a new report by the Campus Computing Project, 89% of higher ed currently uses or is actively consider cloud services. I found that figure quite startling as I hadn't thought that many schools were moving into the cloud just yet. Apparently I was mistaken.

Eportfolio Resources - Out of Practice - 11 views

  •
Eportfolios are a popular practice the world over.  However, although eportfolios have been in existence for over two decades, the effort to share resources about how to develop, implement, and assess an eportfolio program has been a more recent phenomenon.  What follows is a partial list of such materials.  If you would like to add an item to the list, please send an email to wendebmg [at] gmail [dot] com.  Two references are required for new resources.

Wikis in the Classroom: Three Ways to Increase Student Collaboration - Faculty Focus | ... - 200 views

  •
I've long said that professors who want to explore teaching with technology should begin with a social media tool rather than a Learning Management System. Web 2.0 tools are simple to use, invite student collaboration, and are usually less administratively clunky and complex than an LMS.One of the easiest and most powerful tools is the regular old wiki. Wikis are simply web pages that can be edited by their users. Instead of only carrying content from the administrator, they harness the power of crowdsourcing to create a powerful communal resource.

The ability to speak the foreign language in question can safely be described as the principal objective of learning foreign languages. However, it can often prove difficult to assess your pupils' ability to speak the foreign language in the classroom, as time and numbers often conspire against us.

This is a great goal -- but it does take persistence and vision.
  • Through regular classroom observation and targeted professional development activities, it is our hope that over time teachers will be able to effectively monitor their progress through a continuum of technology integration levels
  •
The Technology Integration Matrix (TIM) illustrates how teachers can use technology to enhance learning for K-12 students. The TIM incorporates five interdependent characteristics of meaningful learning environments: active, collaborative, constructive, authentic, and goal directed (Jonassen, Howland, Moore, & Marra, 2003). The TIM associates five levels of technology integration (i.e., entry, adoption, adaptation, infusion, and transformation) with each of the five characteristics of meaningful learning environments. Together, the five levels of technology integration and the five characteristics of meaningful learning environments create a matrix of 25 cells.

Education Week: Effective Use of Digital Tools Seen Lacking in Most Tech.-Rich Schools - 100 views

  • Those factors include integrating technology into intervention classes; setting aside time for professional learning and collaboration for teachers; allowing students to use technology to collaborate; integrating technology into core curricula at least weekly; administering online formative assessments at least weekly; lowering the student-to-computer ratio as much as possible; using virtual field trips at least monthly; encouraging students to use search engines daily; and providing training for principals on how to encourage best practices for technology implementation. Only about 1 percent of the 1,000 schools surveyed by Project RED followed all those steps, and those that did “saw dramatic increases in student achievement and had revenue-positive experiences,” Ms. Wilson said.

Most schools that have integrated laptop computers and other digital devices into learning are not following the paths necessary to maximize the use of technology in ways that will raise student achievement and help save money, a report concludes."We all know that technology does things to improve our lives, but very few schools are implementing properly," said Leslie Wilson, a co-author of the study, "The Technology Factor: Nine Keys to Student Achievement and Cost-Effectiveness," released last month. She is the chief executive officer of the Mason, Mich.-based One-to-One Institute, which advocates putting mobile-computing devices into the hands of all students.

The use of social networking sites for foreign language learning: An autoethnographic s... - 19 views

  •
Despite their spectacular growth in both daily life and mainstream education, little research to date has been conducted concerning the use of social networking sites in foreign language learning. The aim of this study, therefore, is to examine the use of such sites to learn a foreign language. Using an auto-ethnographic approach that included self-aware participation, learner diaries and peer debriefing, we investigated the social networking site Livemocha to study Korean from our perspectives as native speakers and experienced teachers of English. Specifically, we focused our questions on aspects of socio-collaborative principles and practice. Results of a grounded, thematic analysis indicate that the site had number of counter-productive pedagogical impediments to language learning that included, for example, flaws in site design. We conclude our paper with suggestions for improved foreign language learning through social networking sites.
