  • Students submit their annotations via their smart phones or other digital devices, and then analyze each other’s notations collectively.  They could be looking for main ideas, thematic and literary elements, or big ideas from the work.   They could be looking for evidence of connections to other texts, their own experiences, or world issues. They could simply be searching for meaning to support them when reading complex texts.

      Anytime something is shared and ideas are discussed and shared, there seems to be more of a 'real-life' purpose for digging in and completing the task.
  • In order to get students to own this process, we have to relinquish some control. Let them think, let them make mistakes and respond. Let them draw conclusions even they are not the conclusions we would have drawn. We can be there to coach them through misconceptions.

      Step back!  It is amazing to learn from the student's perspective.  Then, if the thinking is not focused toward the goal or objective of the teacher's lesson, a bit of guidance and coaching is all that is needed to steer students toward that goal/objective.

      I just started using Sugarsync which offers more flexibility for sharing individual folders. I am right now using a single subscription (I liked it so much!) to syn my Mac at home with my PC and my Mac at work as well as my wife's Mac at work to my personal Mac (with her login on it). It does all that without problems. I dropped Dropbox when I found, using it as a teacher, that students could take files OUT of Dropbox if they had shared access :( That caused a couple problems ... I like Google Docs "can see but not edit" option to prevent that. I like Google Drive for the potential to make your Google Docs work offline - though I have not tried that yet. However it is frustrating that if you rename or Move the Google Drive folder that Google loses track of the folder; kind of wimpy for a Google Application.... Jay

  • Social bookmarking. When you save a Web site as a favorite or bookmark, it's added to a list that stays within that browser. Use another computer, and you don't have access to that bookmark. When you use a social-bookmarking service, you save your bookmarks on that server, making them available to you wherever you access the Web, and allowing you to share them with others. Ask your students to create accounts on a social-bookmarking service and to bookmark Web sites, news articles, and other resources relevant to the course you're teaching.
