Last year, research firm Gartner heralded the bring-your-own-device, or BYOD, phenomenon as the "most radical shift in enterprise client computing since the introduction of the PC." Such headlines often smack of hyperbole but so far, BYOD has lived up to expectations. If we are preparing students for the world of work, BYOD has to be part of that. Companies are experiencing the same challenges that schools are.

This guide examines the use of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) models in schools. It looks at the potential opportunities and benefits, as well as the considerations, risks and implications that arise when schools allow students and staff to use personally owned devices in the classroom and school environments. Strategies, tips and techniques are included to address the considerations and manage the risks.

This is a narrative account with some reflection on the first time I used "Bring Your Own Device" BYOD in Class - I touch on the difference with BYOT, where Device is replaced by Technology. The class is Irish First-year - Seventh Grade USA? Students aged about 13.

Perhaps there is too much emphasis on the possibility of Bringing Your Own Device (BYOD) and not enough on One Device Per Group.

I was somewhat taken aback by the interest in my last blog posting entitled "The first ever BYOD (not BYOT) class I taught…" I have now analyzed it against a piece by Earnie Kramer called "Thinking about embracing Bring Your Own Device in your school?"

Schools and school districts who have come to the personal computing party decades late now have conjured a cheap less-empowering way to produce an illusion of modernity. They call it "Bring Your Own Device" (BYOD) or "Bring Your Own Technology" (BYOT) and it's a terribly reckless idea for the following reasons.

Bans on student use of mobile devices exist for some good reasons-kids use them inappropriately at school and there are safety and security concerns.  So why bother considering a change?  There are six reasons to consider BYOD.

When the topic of bring your own device comes up, one of the first complaints we often hear, is "What about the have nots." Yes, there are have nots.  However, students should not only be given the freedom to do what those who have the least can do. Students are not prisoners and they are not widgets. They are people with minds, choices, and parents or guardians who can make decisions and should be empowered to use the learning devices they choose.

We complain about students switching out in class, but perhaps if we find ways to build in personal device time (5min social media breaks?) as a reward for focus time, the we may get better student engagement through the course of the class. Explicit permission to check email and social media - transparency.

While you may say "yes," Stager's "no" should be carefully considered to make your BYOD as successful as possible.

The NMC is pleased to announce the interim results of the 2013 Horizon.K12 Project, as presented at the 2013 CoSN Conference in San Diego. The Horizon Project Advisory Board voted for the top 12 emerging technologies as well as the top ten trends and challenges that they believe will have a significant impact on teaching, learning, and creative inquiry in global K-12 education over the next five years.
