Connexions, started at Rice University 10 years ago, debundles education for the D.I.Y. learner. Anyone can write a "module," the term for instructional material that can be a single sentence or 1,000 pages. Connexions hosts more than 16,000 modules that make up almost 1,000 "collections." A collection might be, say, an algebra textbook or statistics course.

Through her strong focus on grades and passing the course, even if one is “no good at mathematics,” Karen sent the message that our abilities are largely fixed and that “getting by” was all that some could hope to accomplish. One might not understand algebra, but with effort one could at least pass the course. Finally, in her efforts to promote order and control, certainly worthwhile and important goals in any classroom, Karen tilted the balance toward students’ becoming passive learners who were dependent on her.

My students in physics classes always come in with a broad range of math ability. Through the class, I teach and reteach a lot of math and sometimes understanding the content gets lost in the stresses of learning the math/algebra. Though to truely understand the interplay between rates and proportions involved a strong math background helps the content and big picture can be grasped even if the math must be buoyed. I hope this program assists my students this year to be more confident with the math so the physics concepts do not get lost.
