The 'EarthEcho Expeditions: What's the Catch?' programme leverages the rich Cousteau legacy of exploration and discovery to bring Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education alive for today's 21st-century learners and their educators. The free, expenses-paid opportunity is planned to allow secondary school teachers to participate as Expedition Fellows to learn first-hand from scientists and engineers the consequences of fisheries mismanagement and how this can be changed for the better with new technological approaches and discoveries."

The Commission on the Humanities and Social Sciences asks us to join in a national conversation about the demise of the humanities in our schools. Watching video from the Apollo space programme one can't help but notice how things have changed since those days in the early 1970s. Banks of small round rectangular screens, dot matrix printers, a myriad of switches and dials each with a specific task to perform and a design aesthetic that says functionality in mild mannered green. What is missing beside the sort of computing power we carry in our pockets today are women. In the 70s science and engineering was what men did and from a quick look at the statistics there continues to be much room for change.

This curriculum module contains lessons to be infused into a broader unit on ecosystems. It is divided into six sections. Each section addresses one of a set of six broad and persistent misunderstandings that students have about ecosystems. These misunderstandings stem from how students reason about the nature of causality. The module sections introduce understandings about the nature of causality in ecosystems that students need to develop in order to overcome the misunderstanding and to deeply understand ecosystem concepts. Research shows that students who are taught about the nature of the causal patterns while learning science achieve a deeper understanding than students who are just taught the science
