Observation data were analyzed through Wenger's (1998) Communities of Practice social learning framework. The purpose was to examine how a cohort can be a valuable resource of new teacher support, particularly in areas where novices, who are being prepared largely through alternative routes, start their careers in some of the most challenging teaching assignments. Key theoretical insights resulting from the analysis include (a) the importance of interactivity of the Wenger elements, (b) the centrality of the community component, and (c) the implications of what legitimate peripheral participation looks like for a solely novice community of practice. Implications of these theoretical considerations are discussed and then linked to possibilities for practice and research to supplement current, traditional induction and mentoring practices.

    I am currently in private education, although I have taught in both. I believe that the school I am at is highly effective in their schooling, but could benefit from these reforms. That being said, I am not sold on the idea that private is better than public, especially as a universal idea ( ie All private education is better than public education). On th other hand I do see it being easier for private education to take on some of these challenges for reform.

      The down side of this is that there also has to be some sort of focus on the importance of completing what is started.  Everything might not have to have an end product but some things certainly should have!
  • At times it has been deeply admonished and hidden from view. Individuals who failed were to be shunned or punished. At other times failure was to be avoided by setting the bar for success so low that failure was impossible. The result of this movement was that success became meaningless, achievable by all without risk and through little effort.

      The generation when who were deeply admonished and hidden is older and most are relieved that this is no longer the case.  The generation who were shunned or punished seem to still be a part of the mainstream but most have embraced that this is no longer the case.  The generation who were part of the low expectations with failure impossible seem to be the predominance of the population now and we are seeing that there is no concept of consequences, no motivation toward high achievement, and an attitude of entitlement.

      This seems like we are evolving but moving more in a cyclical fashion and thinking more like the early innovators in our country - Jefferson, Franklin, Ford, Bell - We see a need for something and strive to create it - marking our failures as a way of knowing, "well that won't work so lets find something that will."

  • The difference is that today's sharing facilitators leverage technology to reach a much wider audience.
  • Although the natural inclination toward sharing cannot be altered, the moral responsibility to share can be influenced by the surrounding culture. The sense of obligation to share or not to share may be similar to the decision to be a vegetarian. For some, it is a lifestyle choice that may form slowly over a long period of time after many conversations with friends and colleagues. For others, the change can be sudden: a paradigm shift caused by participation in an unusual event. If an institution places value on faculty participation in open academic communities and social media activities (e.g., academic blogging), that culture can slowly influence faculty to be more open.
