how is this different than the case for any other types of media? Why should it be any different?

I think it is different in that the shift of access to technology (even though access is another issue altogether) has students on screens for 9 hours a day or something. Companies want them to be passive eyeballs. I want them to be active creators. Unlike television or radio, where the medium forces us into passive roles, mobile apps and websites can potential give them the tools to make their own content, and engage in the world as active participants.

Agree. I think this is important because it opens up a multitude of new choices of who and what they want to be and how they want to learn and then contribute.

In my experience, this does not happen enough in classrooms, though. So, spaces like CLMOOC and DigiWriMo are helpful for allowing teachers to explore, tinker, play, reflect ... if they come along for the ride.

I think this is about curiosity and imagination and passion. We move too quickly to the transactive, toward the 'let's cover the curriculum", to the "I need a product here people that covers my ass"

I agree that they need to learn how to be discerning and critical of all kinds of information they receive. They should learn to be selective and understand the agendas. How can becoming a creator protect one from bad or agenda laden information?

It does not protect us from bad info or political agendas, but making something yourself as a creator does pull the veil back on how something is designed, and how companies and politicians and others leverage the "cool factor" for a message, often invisible to users.

both. there wouldn't be a need for anyone to create anything if there was no one to consume, except of course if it's something for the creator herself/himself. I think :) then the same person is both creator and consumer.

Yes, and what is your agenda when you create? Is it to create art and discussion and interaction in the public sphere? Of course, a world full of only creators would mean no audience for anyone. (Sounds like an interesting short story idea)

I want to discover more ways to engage my students — those 11 year olds growing up in a world in the midst of significant change — as active creators.

I have been calling this the "cognitive commons" and is a recognition of the intelligence of our culture. We are touching 11 year olds who are touching parents and grandparents and extended family and other families. Every bit of which is the cognitive commons. As such it must be nurtured, guarded and used carefully like any 'common pool resource'
