Addition is a way to damage your health. Your health is very important and addiction can damage it in a minutes. "Gaming addiction is not yet classified as a mental health disorder or "true" addiction like gambling or alcohol addiction. However, some gamers clearly struggle to keep their playing habits under control and may place more importance on their gaming accomplishments than their happiness and success in the real world (e.g., academic achievement, friendships, relationships, career advancement, health, etc.). As gaming addiction becomes more of a concern for parents, spouses, families, educators, and those in the mental health community, it is important for those hoping to learn more about this issue to get their gaming addiction statistics and facts from reputable sources. "

If you think your not addicted, you need to ask yourself these questions and see. It is not good to be. " Dr. Kimberly Young has likened Internet addiction to addictive syndromes similar to impulse-control disorders on the Axis I Scale of the DSM. She also developed the Internet Addiction Diagnostic Questionnaire (IADQ) to diagnose the disorder. Meeting five of the following symptoms were considered necessary to be diagnosed. 1. Do you feel preoccupied with the Internet (think about previous online activity or anticipate next online session)? 2. Do you feel the need to use the Internet with increasing amounts of time in order to achieve satisfaction? 3. Have you repeatedly made unsuccessful efforts to control, cut back, or stop Internet use? 4. Do you feel restless, moody, depressed, or irritable when attempting to cut down or stop Internet use? 5. Do you stay online longer than originally intended? 6. Have you jeopardized or risked the loss of significant relationship, job, educational or career opportunity because of the Internet? 7. Have you lied to family members, therapist, or others to conceal the extent of involvement with the Internet? 8. Do you use the Internet as a way of escaping from problems or of relieving a dysphoric mood (e.g., feelings of helplessness, guilt, anxiety, depression)? Other Symptoms Include: * Failed attempts to control behavior * Heightened sense of euphoria while involved in computer and Internet activities * Neglecting friends and family * Neglecting sleep to stay online * Being dishonest with others * Feeling guilty, ashamed, anxious, or depressed as a result of online behavior * Physical changes such as weight gain or loss, backaches, headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome * Withdrawing from other pleasurable activities"

The Facebook family safety center has information on safety. I still feel it is very convoluted and very confusing but it does have some information for educators and parents on the site.

Do you want to know who is tracking you and how? Install the Collusion Firefox add on and start understanding who is tracking you. I am going to use this with students for some education.

This article points out that up to 30 months after photos are deleted from Facebook that they are still there. If someone has the direct URL to a photo, it is still accessible. Students should be taught about this and we should educate ourselves as well. Once something is uploaded it is out there. Period. You cannot take it back.

i think this is an interesting article and its good to no about the information it gave us and that you should be careful what you post on the internet. its the interenet and its not a different life and anyone can see it

Adult literacy/basic education/ESOL students are beginning to use the Internet. An increasing number are very interested in using it for a wide range of purposes: for learning (e.g. to improve reading and writing skills, or take a course;) to access a wide variety of information (e.g. information about the weather, health, travel, other cultures, American news, and -- in the case of ESOL students -- news from their native countries;) for classes at school; for shopping; to communicate with friends, family members, other students, or key pals; for entertainment; for virtual travel; and for the sense of control and power one can feel when using a computer and the Internet. Adult students appear to experience many of the same kinds of difficulties in using the Internet that their teachers do: problems getting access and getting online; having the system crash for a variety of reasons; difficulty figuring out how to navigate online; problems with online and hardcopy instructions; finding out-of-date information at sites; and reading on-screen. Some students also cited problems with their keyboard skills.

This year, some of my students have used woogi world to teach fourth graders about digital citizenship. This wiki documenting their efforts is to be finished by next Tuesday. This is a great project.

New rules from the CIPA act in the US.

Lisa thuman blogged about the recent changes to the Children Internet Protection Act (CIPA) -- to those people who have rejected social networking and chats -- you're required to "educate minors on appropriate online safety including cyberbulling and interacting with others on social networking sites and in chat rooms." How are you going to do this without using safe alternatives and then coach them on it? This is REQUIRED in the US if you get erate funds. Get out there and get busy -- time for pushback. Lisa Thuman's article on this is an excellent read.

"# What's the impact of messages related to classwork when they're part of a large stream of messages students receive from friends, family, horoscope advice, sports scores and so on? # What sort of learning happens best (or is reinforced best, perhaps) via SMS? # How can these sorts of messages be adapted to students' progress and how can they be sequenced and scaffolded over time? # How many students are able and willing to participate in these sorts of educational activities via their mobile phone? Can students afford the texting fees? Do they want to use their text-messaging allocations for this purpose? # Can we subsidize this sort of SMS traffic for student populations? # If these sorts of messages between home and school become more common, will there be a way to include parents and parents' phones in the loop? # Can these quizzes be sent to parents' phones so that they can have the opportunity to pose a question to their children? Students communicate digitaly at a young age students may struggle with writing, and be better understanding it in images, videos, and songs or music. Special education students may find it easier to express themselves by speaking or pictures instead of writing. It is create communication with sound, pictures and writing.

CYBERBULLY Many parent do not what to do in case of cyberbullying. The more prepared they are, the more likely they are to save their child from cyberbullying. "Be your child's support system. Be firm. Know your child. Know the danger signs. Educate."
