Mike Lemmon made an excellent post on Personal Learning Networks, that led me to talk to him and Jeffery Whitlock about them. Jeffery led me to this book about declining social capital, and made a blog post about it.

Here is the comment I left on the SlideShare website: This is super important stuff, thank you for sharing. In our digital age, a person's ability to market themselves on the web is a form of social capital. The more people follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and the blogosphere, the greater influence we can have. It makes me think about what happens in the book, 'Ender's Game' by Orson Scott Card. In the story, Peter and Valentine publish a lot of political commentary under aliases which eventually have a huge impact on world politics. Our future world may be run by those who can best market themselves and let their voice be heard.

Illustrates some of the potential problems with a gift economy.

Interesting ideas on how open access, open data, and open knowledge can all be incorporated into the field of science. Good video.

If you want to look deeper into any meaning that can be derived from this website, it would be that I found this website by doing the following: I looked on the digital literacy labs page, I clicked on the Create labs, I clicked the link to Slideshare.net, I looked at the top presentations which was done by a Heidi Miller, I followed Heidi Miller, looked at her profile, went to her blog, read some then scrolled down far enough and found this sweet gem of the internet.

I stumbled upon this website the other day. Its an article site with a bunch of hired authors. "Wait--hired authors!!" You say, in righteous defense of the open "wiki" model. But the cool thing about hired authors is that they are all viewing and rating each other's articles. Hence, "helium," the best articles rise to the top. I mean who decided that it was the best system to have bored 40 year olds living with their parents as the main source of information. (Let's be honest, those wikipedia articles didn't write themselves.) The good thing about a paid workforce is that there is a sense of pressure under writing the articles. Their business model is in and of itself an "invisible hand." Anyways, i thought it was a cool idea. Voila.

Just a compilation of book reviews for "The Origin of Species" from Amazon.com. However, they are good reviews that explain some of the things that Darwin discussed in his book.

I never knew that Second Life was being used to this extent. People are using it for educational and occupational purposes. It is quite amazing, but I wonder if we lose a sense of reality, or gain something more from it?
