Forty years ago, the couple staged an act of nonviolent protest in support of peace

Montreal wasn't their first choice.In fact it wasn't even their second. When John Lennon and Yoko Ono checked in to Montreal's Queen Elizabeth Hotel at midnight on May 26, 1969, it was, in part, due to heat and marijuana. John and Yoko's Bed-in was originally conceived in Holland two months earlier.

In the piece I wrote here recently, the talk was of things that happened 40 years ago. Maybe we could stay there for a little, since today is the 40th anniversary of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's infamous bed-in, a performance "peace" staged for the world's media.

During the Vietnam War, in 1969, John Lennon and Yoko Ono held two week-long Bed-Ins for Peace in Amsterdam and Montreal, which were their non-violent ways of protesting wars and promoting peace. The idea is derived from a " sit-in", in which a group of protesters remains seated in front of an establishment until they are evicted, arrested, or their demands are met.

Gail Renard remembers how as a 16-year old school reporter, she joined John Lennon's entourage in 1969, and witnessed first hand his "bed-in" peace protests.

I very rarely publicly support, or strongly promote for protests in Lebanon, very few protests were worth taking part into, but this one is! I hope we can discuss this more tomorrow in class, but I would suggest we meet somewhere and march together. Speaking of activism, this is definitely worth the time and effort!
