While the rest of the world commemorated International Women's Day on March 8, women in the Middle East had less to celebrate than most.

This article is based on some of the research that Nicola Pratt conducted over the past two years on women's activism in Egypt, Lebanon, and Jordan, from independence until the Arab uprisings. Nicola collected over one hundred personal narratives from middle class women activists of different generations. The article includes the rise of radical movements after 1967, the counter-revolution (post-1967), and re-popularizing and de-popularizing women's rights after 2011.

This article is based on some of the research that I have conducted over the past two years on women's activism in Egypt, Lebanon, and Jordan, from independence until the Arab uprisings. I collected over one hundred personal narratives from middle class women activists of different generations.

I thought this article was interesting in contrast to today's viewings on women's rights in Egypt. Women in ancient Egypt had similar and nearly all the same rights as men, which is quite the opposite today.

This article talks about how women were in ancient Egypt. Women were given rights although a little disproportionate but they were treated well. Women had rights to own property, divorce their husbands, and inherit the property their deceased husbands owned.

Women in ancient Egypt were on the same level as men as pictured by art and contemporary manuscripts. The division was found within socioeconomic status, not gender.

The two women I just posted about were released from prison. They were held in prison for 2 months. The charges were unclear but some believe they were linked to the women's social media accounts in regards to being female rights activists.
