An Egyptian woman pretended to be a man for 40 years to work and support daughter because her husband had died and she had no means of supporting herself and her daughter. She made money by polishing shoes, the alternative would have been begging on the streets. The money that she made supported her daughter and eventually even her grandchildren.
Rising Number of Women Entrepeneurs - 0 views

This article raises two interesting points. 1) women account for only 11% of entrepeneurs in Egypt and 2) the two women showcased in the article wore full-face veils which is done by only 1 out of every 10 women in Egypt.

This source talks about the success that Egypt has made in the political field since the Arab Spring. It talks about the role of women in achieving this, which is something that I have not found in my research so far, most of the sources I have found have been highly critical of the political landscape since the Arab Spring.
Literacy in Egypt - 0 views

Although this is not specific to women, there are definitely corresponding factors. In 1995, the literacy rate was 51.4, 2003 it was 57.7, 2005, just before the Arab Spring it was at 71.4 which shows quite a bit of improvement, and then in 2010 it was only 72. This is really interesting to me. Between 2005 and 2010 the literacy rate only went up 71.4. to 72.

While doing research on women's rights in Egypt I came across the term "female genital mutilation" which is something we have all heard of, but I had not thought about this concept lately, nor in the context of this project. So I googled it, and what I found was shocking:
The Demographic and Health Survey in Egypt in 2000 showed that 97%
of married women included in the survey had experienced female genital
cutting (i.e. FGM). Another study by the Egyptian Ministry of Health and
Population in 2003 reported that over 94% of married women had been
exposed to genital cutting and 69% of those women agreed to the
procedure being carried out on their daughters. Further, a pilot study
by the Health Insurance Organization showed that 41% of female students
in primary, preparatory and secondary schools had undergone genital
cutting.

I found the website of the female writer Mona Eltahawy. On her website it says "during the 18-day revolution that toppled Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak, she appeared on most major media outlets, leading the feminist website Jezebel to describe her was "The Woman Explaining Egypt to the West." I plan to use her insight in my research.

Interactive Chart - 0 views

This chart is useful because it is interactive and allows one to see in several different categories how women's rights compare in the Middle East, Europe, Asia and the Pacific, Sub-Sahara Africa, OECD, and South Asia. Unfortunately, yet predictably, the Middle East scored significantly worse in all of the following categories: domestic violence, constitution, harassment, property, abortion, and work.

Movie about the Treatment of Women in Egytian Prisons - 0 views

In conjunction with the other article I posted about the treatment of Egyptian women in prison, I found an article about a movie that was made about the issue to spread awareness and hopefully lead to changes. Apparently the movie was incredibly well-made and gave face to a real and terrible problem that women in Egypt face when they are sentenced to prison.

Abuse of Women in Prisons - 0 views

After reports of abused emerged from a women's prison in Egypt, a committee is set to investigate the complaints. This was probably something that would have been ignored in the past, so I believe this article is important in showing that women should not be mistreated by their male guards while in a detention facility. This is a very interesting source that I found when I was going through the resources on the class blog. It also has the original version of the document in Arabic on the website. It details the relationship between husband, wife, and child, and how this is different in different countries, and how it is in Egypt.

This is an article from the website "Middle East Voices: Analysis, Perspectives, Conversation," which is a website dedicated to those who are willing to speak out about issues that they are faced with in the Middle East. The article that I found is titled "VOICES: Women's Rights in Egypt - Re-examining a Revolution" and it was about the evolving role of women, and how there are two challenges that women are facing: "the first is on the policy level because of the conservative religious government and how they understand Islan, and the second is on the cultural level."
Sisa Gaber Abu Douh, the 65 year old woman who was forced to dress as a man to make money for her daughter, was awarded by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on Sunday for working more than 40 years. In her home town she is known as "the city's most supportive mother and has recently received the 'breadwinner; ' award from the Social Solidarity Ministry on Mother's Day" which was celebrated in the Arab world last week.
