The CSS Box Model | Chris Coyier CSS Tricks - 0 views

  •
Chris Coyier discusses the basics of the CSS Box Model: "every element in web design is a rectangular box. This was my ah-ha moment that helped me really start to understand CSS-based web design and accomplish the layouts I wanted to accomplish. We've talked about the positioning of these boxes a bit, and about their behavior." "What we haven't talked about much is the box itself. How is the size of the box calculated exactly? "

How to get Cross Browser Compatibility Every Time | Anthony Short | Web Design & Develo... - 0 views

  • Here is a quick summary for those of you who don't want to read the whole article: Always use strict doctype and standards-compliant HTML/CSS Always use a reset at the start of your css Use opacity:0.99 on text elements to clean up rendering in Safari Never resize images in the CSS or HTML Check font rendering in every browser. Don't use Lucida Size text as a % in the body, and as em's throughout All layout divs that are floated should include display:inline and overflow:hidden Containers should have overflow:auto and trigger hasLayout via a width or height Don't use any fancy CSS3 selectors Don't use transparent PNG's unless you have loaded the alpha
  •
Cross-browser compatibility is one of the most time consuming tasks for any web designer. We've seen many different articles over the net describing common problems and fixes. I've collated all the information I could find to create some coding conventions for ensuring that your site will work first time in every browser. There are some things you should consider for Safari and Firefox also, and IE isn't always the culprit for your CSS woes.

The Big Table Problem | 8164 - 0 views

  •
My friend/ex-coworker Sam the Wonder Boy used to send me late night AIM messages comprised of only three letters, "M.F.R." This would then send chills up my spine, and I'd curl up on the floor in fetal position and weep nonstop. OK, I'm exaggerating a quite bit, and Sam doesn't do that anymore. "M.F.R." stands for "Monthly Forecast Report." It was one of the many modules of a huge intranet web application we worked on years ago. As the name implies, it was a report. Before arriving to the actual report screen, the user could select some criteria such as date range, products, etc. Depending on the selection, the report can have up to sixty columns and thousands of rows. It was quite a challenge both on the backend and frontend. I initially created it using server side Excel API and dumped it to the frontend as an excel sheet. In version 2 I made it as an HTML table with the Excel export option. In version 3 I ditched HTML and went for Crystal Report, in version 3.5 it became Active Report. In version 4 we rewrote the whole application as a .NET client app, with the report section being Excel again. In version 5, well there wasn't a version 5. The whole project got outsourced to India and the team was disbanded. But that's a blog for another day.

Introduction to CSS3 - Part 4: User Interface | Design Shack - 0 views

  •
This tutorial will be taking a look at some of the new ways you can manipulate user interface features in CSS3. But what do we mean by "user interface"? CSS3 brings some great new properties relating to resizing elements, cursors, outlining, box layout and more. We're focusing on three of the most significant user interface enhancements in this tutorial. The examples shown below can be seen at our CSS3 examples page. Many, however, can only be appreciated in the latest builds of various browsers:

Top 10 CSS image gallery tutorials (YouNeed2See Technology) - 0 views

  • There are many tutorials out there on how to create your own image gallery. There are simple ones made from pure CSS, and there are complex ones using css and javascript. By the end of this article you will have the information necessary to start building your own photo gallery. The first tutorial is from cssplay and is one of my favorites around. They have a very elegant and simple image gallery. Your images are separated into different sections (people, plants, animals, etc) and all your images for each section listed nicely underneath. As you hover over each image it expands double it's size so you can take a better look at each image before you view the full version. The interface is very clean and simple to use, I recommend taking a look at this one.

Five simple steps to better typography : Journal : Mark Boulton - 0 views

  • One point = 1/72 of an inch One pica = 12 points One em = The distance horizontally equal to the type size, in points, you are using. Eg. 1em of 12pt type is 12pt. (Thanks to Joe for correcting me on this.)
  • A general good rule of thumb is 2-3 alphabets in length, or 52-78 characters (including spaces).

  • Your leading should increase proportionally to your Measure. Small Measure, less leading. Wide Measure, more leading.
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • When reversing colour out, eg white text on black, make sure you increase the leading, tracking and decrease your font-weight. This applies to all widths of Measure.
