Most important smartphones of 2012-13 - 0 views

•
"iPhone 5 Called ""Gadget off the Year"" by Time Magazine, Apple's iPhone 5 (from $199 on 2-year AT&T, Sprint or Verizon plan) is a serious piece of hardware. Along with its powerful new A6 chip, iPhone 5 works on 4G/Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks for wireless speeds that rivals your home's broadband connection. iPhone 5 also has improved cameras: an eight-megapixel iSight rear-facing camera (3264 x 2448 pixels) and front-facing FaceTime camera with 720p HD quality for video calling. Samsung Galaxy S III The Samsung Galaxy S III (from $149 on 2-year plan with AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, Verizon) is a true smartphone in every sense of the word -- and we're not even referring to its stunning 4.8-inch display, fast LTE speeds or versatile Android operating system. the Galaxy S III's front-facing camera knows when you're looking at the screen, so it'll give you the bright display you seek, but if your eyes look away it'll dim itself to preserve its battery. It also knows when you want to talk: if you're messaging with someone and want to call them, simply lift the smartphone to your ear and it'll dial for you. Nokia Lumia 920 As the flagship Windows Phone 8 device, Nokia's Lumia 920 (from $99.99 on 2-year AT&T plan), has a lot to offer, including a colorful Start screen with ""live tiles""; familiar Microsoft apps like Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote; and a People hub that aggregates all your contacts into one page per person (so you don't need to close, say Outlook, to see what that friend is up to on Facebook or Twitter). HTC Droid DNA and HTC One X+ A pair of Android-powered HTC devices are also worthy of ""best of 2012"" nods: the HTC Droid DNA ($149.99 on 2-year Verizon Wireless plan) and HTC One X+ ($199.99 on 2-year AT&T plan). Protected by Corning's uber-durable Gorilla Glass 2 technology, the Droid DNA's 5-inch 1080p HD screen was built for video, games, ebooks and web browsing. Integrated Beats Audio - an

WAIT - 0 views

•
The deputy director of eduction at the Taubman Museum of Art located in Roanoke, VA (see http://taubmanmuseum.org). has designed, and recently had created, a Web-based Art Interactive Tool (WAIT) that allows users to interact with works in the permanent collection in a unique manner. Using a scaffolding interpretive model that he also designed (REED-LO), users, through WAIT, formulate an interpretation of a work of art in the collection. WAIT provides the user with guiding questions and allows users to record their thoughts online - in the end, they publish their overall interpretation of the work of art online. Teachers can create, for free, "classrooms" through WAIT that includes all of their students. They can then assign a specific work of art to their students. The students then access the work using a unique username and password. After they publish their interpretations, the teacher can approve each interpretation which then allows the students to access what their peers wrote about the work of art as well as the "expert" essay related to the work. In essence WAIT allows users to formulate a personal meaning of a work of art before reading what others have written about the work. WAIT can be found both through the Taubman Museum of Art's website, under the "Learn" section, or by going to www.waitarttool.com - it is free to use.

• it is beneficial to address while the race to adopt and implement highly engaging Web 3-D virtual worlds is watched in healthcare professional education
• Therefore, Roger’s Diffusion of Innovations Theory [5] and Siemens’ Connectivism Theory [6] for today’s learners will serve as theoretical frameworks for this paper.
• A 3-D virtual world, also known as a Massively Multiplayer Virtual World (MMVW), is an example of a Web 2.0/Web 3-D dynamic computer-based application.
• applications that enable social publishing, such as blogs and wikis
• the most popular virtual world used by the general public is Linden Lab’s Second Life (SL)

• US agencies, such as the Centers for Disease Control and the National Institutes of Health conduct meetings in SL to discuss the educational potential of SL
• virtual medical universities exist all over the world
• The term “avatar” is an old Sanskrit word portraying a deity which takes on a human shape
• Trauma Center
• Virtual worlds are currently being used as educational spaces [1] and continue to grow in popularity on campuses and businesses worldwide. Furthermore, access to versions of virtual worlds on the Web, such as “Croquet,” “Uni-Verse,” and “Multiverse” are predicted within two to three years to be mainstream in education
• there are reported advantages to having students engage in these emerging technologies
• By allowing students time to interact with other avatars (eg, patients, staff members, and other healthcare professionals) in a safe, simulated environment, a decrease in student anxiety, an increase in competency in learning a new skill, and encouragement to cooperate and collaborate, as well as resolve conflicts, is possible.

• Who would imagine attending medical school in a virtual world?
• Problem-based learning groups enrolled in a clinical management course at Coventry University meet in SL and are employed to build learning facilities for the next semester of SL students. This management course teaches students to manage healthcare facilities and is reported to be the first healthcare-related class to use SL as a learning environment.
• Another example of a medical school using SL is St. George’s Medical School in London.
• Stanford University medical school
• Another virtual world project developed by staff at the Imperial College in London, in collaboration with the National Physical Lab in the United Kingdom, is the Second Health Project
• Mesko [35] presents the top 10 virtual medical sites in SL.
• The development and use of 3-D virtual worlds in nursing education is increasing.
• Some educators may balk at adopting this technology because there is a learning curve associated with the use of 3-D virtual worlds.
• Let’s have fun, explore these fascinating worlds and games, and network with others while respecting diverse ways of life-long learning and current researchers’ findings.
• there is an underlying push in higher education to adopt these collaborative tools and shift the paradigm from a traditional Socratic method of education to one possessing a more active and interactive nature
• One may view online virtual worlds and serious gaming as a threat to the adoption and purchase of high-fidelity computerized patient-simulation mannequins that are currently purchased for healthcare-profession training. For example, nurses may login into SL and learn Advanced Cardiac Life Support at their convenience, and it costs virtually nothing for the nurse and perhaps a nominal fee for the developer.
• The educational opportunity in SL may not be a replacement for the doctor- or nurse-patient interaction or relationship, but SL may serve as an adjunct or pre- or post-learning tool.
• one recalls when critics questioned the validity and reliability of the stethoscope invented by Laennec in 1816 and how today it is second nature to use this assessment tool.

• economic progress and educational achievement have always gone hand in hand in America.
• The source of America's prosperity, then, has never been merely how ably we accumulate wealth, but how well we educate our people. This has never been more true than it is today. In a 21st century world where jobs can be shipped wherever there's an internet connection; where a child born in Dallas is competing with children in Delhi; where your best job qualification is not what you do, but what you know - education is no longer just a pathway to opportunity and success, it is a prerequisite.

Individualization--good plan
• I am calling on a new generation of Americans to step forward and serve our country in our classrooms. If you want to make a difference in the life of our nation; if you want to make the most of your talents and dedication; if you want to make your mark with a legacy that will endure - join the teaching profession. America needs you.

• extra pay to Americans who teach math and science
• if a teacher is given a chance but still does not improve, there is no excuse for that person to continue teaching
• fourth part of America's education strategy - promoting innovation and excellence in America's schools.
• I call on states to reform their charter rules, and lift caps on the number of allowable charter schools,
• We can no longer afford an academic calendar designed when America was a nation of farmers who needed their children at home plowing the land at the end of each day.
• expand effective after-school programs
• rethink the school day to incorporate more time - whether during the summer or through expanded-day programs
• let us all make turning around our schools our collective responsibility as Americans. That will require new investments in innovative ideas. That is why my budget invests in developing new strategies to make sure at-risk students don't give up on their education; new efforts to give dropouts who want to return to school the help they need to graduate; and new ways to put those young men and women who have left school back on a pathway to graduation.
• The fifth part of America's education strategy is providing every American with a quality higher education - whether it's college or technical training.
• simplify federal college assistance forms
• the goal of having the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by the year 2020.
• Adults of all ages need opportunities to earn new degrees and skills
• bottom line is that no government policies will make any difference unless we also hold ourselves more accountable as parents.

The Keyword Blog: Kermit the Frog Search Challenge (Information Literacy Games) - 4 views

•
Information Literacy Games: Finding Kermit This blog post features a great video of Kermit the frog singing It Ain't Easy Being Green. It follows up with an explanation of a search game that can be used with the whole class in a lab or on an individual workstation. It's part of a free series of online information literacy / information fluency games available from 21cif.com. Finding Kermit was the inspiration for one of the first Internet Search Challenges created by Dr. Carl Heine. The task is to track down a picture of Kermit ready for graduation in the least amount of time. The search game is embedded on the page so you can try it without going to the main site. Many teachers use this as a whole class lab activity. Put up a search challenge and then it's off the races! Most of these games were developed for middle and high school students. Adults find them challenging as well.

However, online classes are completely different from any other educational endeavor and require a new set of skills. This well-written and understandable book covers some theories of learning styles but focuses on the nuts-and-bolts skills needed to be successful. Each chapter explores a particular aspect of learning online and gives practical advice about how to participate successfully in an online learning environment. Educational Uses of Digital Storytelling - 0 views

•
Digital Storytelling is the practice of using computer-based tools to tell stories. As with traditional storytelling, most digital stories focus on a specific topic and contain a particular point of view. However, as the name implies, digital stories usually contain some mixture of computer-based images, text, recorded audio narration, video clips and/or music. Digital stories can vary in length, but most of the stories used in education typically last between two and ten minutes. And the topics that are used in Digital Storytelling range from personal tales to the recounting of historical events, from exploring life in one's own community to the search for life in other corners of the universe, and literally, everything in between. A great way to begin learning about Digital Storytelling is by watching the following video introduction to Digital Storytelling.

How to know that my computer is virus or malware infected? - 0 views

Malware, as you know is a class of malicious software such as spyware, adware, or viruses that compromise with the system's performance and security. And in majority of cases they infiltrate through general Internet activities --- browsing, surfing, and downloading, or executing programs or files. Hence, most of the virus or malware defense methods are based on encouraging secure Internet access. Though, virus or malware authors are using astute development techniques, keeping a keen eye on the behavior of your machine, can be helpful in winning the battle of computer security. Following are a few notable symptoms, which can be perceived as an indication of virus or malware attack:

Attention, and Other 21st-Century Social Media Literacies (EDUCAUSE Review) | EDUCAUSE - 2 views

•
"You need to learn how to exercise mindful deployment of your attention online if you are going to become a critical consumer of digital media; productive use of Twitter or YouTube requires knowledge of who your public is, how your participation meets their needs (and what you get in return), and how memes flow through networked publics. Ultimately, the most important fluency is not in mastering a particular literacy but in being able to put all five of these literacies together into a way of being in digital culture."

"Post-Mortem Summary This document details the cause and events occurring immediately after App Engine's outage on February 24th, 2010, as well as the steps we are taking to mitigate the impact of future outages like this one in the future. On February 24th, 2010, all Googe App Engine applications were in varying degraded states of operation for a period of two hours and twenty minutes from 7:48 AM to 10:09 AM PT | 15:48 to 18:09 GMT. The underlying cause of the outage was a power failure in our primary datacenter. While the Google App Engine infrastructure is designed to quickly recover from these sort of failures, this type of rare problem, combined with internal procedural issues extended the time required to restore the service. <> "

"Introduction In recent years, the world has witnessed a growing wave of local initiatives in support of public schools. Teachers, cultural associations and civil society have been playing an active part in grassroots experiments aimed at helping schools in the creative elaboration of new educational methods, also exploiting information technologies. Here answers are coming from those directly faced with educational issues, in contrast with the more common top-down reforms, where experts' committees draw up didactic experimentation plans to be put forward to willing teachers. Experiments like that are often very effective but, unfortunately, they rarely get known beyond the immediate sphere of their promoters. Moreover, they tend to be short-lived because promoters don't have the strength to sustain them and a suitable supporting network is lacking. They are like drops in the ocean: they apparently cannot change the entire educational system. But the ocean of whole human community could be flooded by many such contained experiments that would transform it, if the most meaningful of them could be fostered, spread and developed. ..."

Geezers online and implications for schools - 0 views

• While school leaders (rightly) focus on the importance of the Internet in students' lives and education, we ought to also seriously be considering what this report says about how we communicate with our parents and communities. And asking what exepectations we should have of all teachers of an online presence and use of digital communications.
• Most of our parents fall smack into the Gen X category - that which has a disproportionately high percentage number of online users and is increasingly likely to look for information online.
• Too often educators think of students as their "customers." Dangerous mistake. Children no more choose their schools than they choose their physicians or shoe stores. Parents who wouldn't choose a bank that does not allow online account access won't choose a school that doesn't offer online gradebook access either.

Yoga and Sports: Tennis | Blog Of Sport - 0 views

Tennis requires cat-like reflexes with short bursts of strength. These short movements do not allow the muscles to extend their full length. When muscles are strenuously worked they become tight and can lose their elasticity unless properly stretched. Yoga exercises can increase the body's range of motion. The lack of movement because of inflexibility binds the joints. Without the elasticity of the muscles, I think an athlete can be a prisoner within his own body.

What kind of schools and systems of education does America need to transform mathematics and science education and deliver it equitably and with excellence to all students? The Commission believes that the magnitude of the challenge demands transformative change in classrooms, schools, and education systems. Educators, students, parents, leaders of universities, museums, and the business and professional communities, scientists and mathematicians, and public officials at all levels will need to embrace a new understanding that the world has shifted dramatically-and that an equally dramatic shift is needed in educational expectations and the design of schooling.

"Handset makers and wireless carriers love to load up Google's Android platform with custom overlays, user interface tweaks, and third-party programs that don't ship natively with the open source operating system. That's great for them, but most power users would prefer a clean version of Android to work with, which is why the third-party ROM community is popular. Well, following in the footsteps of Samsung and it's custom S4 that was announced at Google I/O, HTC is reportedly kicking around the idea of offering a Google Edition of its One smartphone. News of the custom HTC One comes from Russell Holly over at Geek.com. Citing un-named sources, Holly says the Google Edition device would be offered in the U.S. first, though it's unclear if it would be carried in the Play Store like the Galaxy S4 will be. Other details are equally light and vague, though Holly claims an official announcement could come within the next two weeks, with a release likely planned for sometime this summer."
