The Economist explains: Everything you want to know about migration across the Mediterr... - 0 views

  •
"The make-up of the flows has changed over the years. Migrants currently come mainly from west Africa, the horn of Africa and, since 2013, Syria. Last year, according to the UNHCR, 31% of arrivals were Syrians, and 18% were fleeing Eritrea. So far this year the flow to Italy is dominated by migrants from the Gambia, Senegal and Somalia. There are routes through the Sahara from both west Africa and the Horn of Africa; there are also some routes along the Mediterranean coast. For many of the communities along the way the traffic in would-be migrants is now a dominant part of the local economy. "

Welcome to Italy: this is what a real immigration crisis looks like » The Spe... - 2 views

  • Well, Italy has been invaded in just this way, by migrants from many nations all coming over here from Libya. And Italy’s unelected government has agreed to take them all. This makes the Italian people — who are among the least racist in Europe — very angry. It’s hard to blame them.
  • This hugely expensive operation — ‘Mare Nostrum’ — ran until October last year and rescued nearly 190,000 people.
  • ‘They don’t want to be identified here — otherwise, under the Dublin Accords, they would have to stay in our country. So when a police officer is in front of an Eritrean who is two metres tall who doesn’t want his fingerprints taken, he can’t break his fingers, but must respect his human rights.’

  • Last year, most were from sub-Saharan Africa.
  • It’s worth remembering here that the majority of the boat people are Muslims and reports suggest that a small number are Islamic terrorists. The terrorists of ISIS are, we know from their Twitter feeds, obsessed with taking their crusade to Rome.
  • no intention of staying in Italy
  • has been mired in recession for most of the past six years, with an official unemployment rate of 13 per cent (the real rate is probably 20 per cent) and the youth unemployment rate at a staggering 43 per cent.
  • A couple of months ago, there was much talk about UN sanctioned military action by the EU to stop the smugglers’ boats putting to sea from the Libyan coast.
  • The French have ‘closed’ their border with Italy on the Côte d’Azur in defiance of the Schengen Agreement, which guarantees free movement within member nations. They are rigorously checking trains, cars and even footpaths across the mountains, and sending any illegal migrants back to Italy; they say they have sent back 6,000 this year. The justification is simple: the Italians are failing to identify these people and distinguish economic migrants from refugees. Who can argue with that? The Austrians are doing the same at the Brenner Pass in the Alps.
  • ‘an attack against life’ akin to abortion
  • All of us feel it to be our moral duty to save lives where we can. Yet it cannot be our moral duty to ferry such vast numbers across the Mediterranean into Italy and Europe for ever, unless they are genuine refugees.
  • Prime Minister Renzi tried to pretend that the migrant crisis did not exist, but now that it has turned into an emergency he can remain silent no longer. He blames other EU countries for putting the nation before the union — in this latest meltdown of EU collective responsibility — and the British and the French in particular for getting rid of Muammar Gaddafi and turning Libya into a failed state.

Biden administration makes second attempt to end "Remain in Mexico" border program - CB... - 0 views

  • The Biden administration on Friday announced its second attempt to end a Trump-era border program that forced migrants to wait in Mexico for their U.S. asylum hearings, issuing a new termination memo it hopes will pass legal muster.
  • "I recognize that MPP likely contributed to reduced migratory flows. But it did so by imposing substantial and unjustifiable human costs on the individuals who were exposed to harm while waiting in Mexico,"
  • Lawyers representing the government, as well as Texas and Missouri, which filed the lawsuit against the termination of the Remain in Mexico policy, are set to convene on Tuesday to hold oral arguments before the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, which is hearing the administration's appeal of the August ruling.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • The Trump administration used the MPP to return 70,000 migrants to Mexico,
  • The modifications include expanding migrants' access to lawyers; striving to complete court cases within 180 days; and creating a policy exception for at-risk asylum-seekers, including migrants who identify as members of the LGBTQI community and those whose age or medical conditions make them too vulnerable to be returned to Mexico, DHS officials said.
  • Kacsmaryk also determined the reversal of the Trump-era border policy led the Biden administration to violate a section of U.S. immigration law that mandates the detention of certain asylum-seekers, since there's currently not enough detention capacity to detain all of them.

Poor E.U. Migrants Test Limits of Swedish Tolerance - 3 views

The Romani (also spelled Romany; /ˈroʊməni/, /ˈrɒ-/), or Roma, are a traditionally itinerant ethnic group living mostly in Europe and the Americas, who originate from the northwestern regions of the Indian subcontinent.[49] The Romani are widely known among English-speaking people by the exonym "Gypsies" (or "Gipsies"). However, according to many Romani people and academics who study them, the word has been tainted by its use as a racial slur and a pejorative connoting illegality and irregularity.[50][51][52][53][54][55][56] Other exonyms are Ashkali and Sinti. Seeking a Fair Distribution of Migrants in Europe - 0 views

  •
New York Times analysis of demographic, economic and asylum data for each country. Note: Britain, Denmark and Ireland are exempt from the new relocation plan. The plan is not comprehensive: Five times as many migrants have already arrived in Greece this year as the 50,400 who would be relocated to other countries by the plan. Interesting to see a visual on the distribution of migrants thus far and how it compares to that country's policy.

Europe Keeps Asylum Seekers at a Distance, This Time in Rwanda | NYT - 2 views

Does Rwanda have the resources to support the 500 incoming Libyan migrants? Why is Rwanda the best option? How can the EU, as a whole, make the decision to pay countries like Turkey to deal with migrants if leaders like Macron want to take a different approach? Who decides for the EU?

Why Haitians in Chile Keep Heading North to the U.S. - The New York Times - 1 views

  •
Of the thousands of Haitians who showed up recently at the southern border of the United States, many came from Chile. Over the past decade, as Haitians sought refuge from the devastating 2010 earthquake, Chile - with its generous entry policy and stable economy - became an even more attractive destination for them. However, things changed quickly with the election of two new presidents.

Good find, Kylan, although it's such a tough story. The author digs into the multiple forces at play in Chile that ends up putting Haitian migrants behind Venezuelan migrants.

US to fly Haitian migrants back after thousands gather at Texas border | US immigration... - 1 views

  •
About 2,000 people have gathered between the US and Mexico border. Neither of the countries are willing to accept them currently, citing Covid concerns as a reason. However, recently, the frequency of migrants arriving at US borders has been increasing, and I am curious on how this administration will handle it.
  •
Truly devastating. The United States needs better policies to accept immigrants and process asylum/refugee visas, especially from nations like Haiti, which have been ravaged by poverty, political violence, and natural disasters.I doubt these deportations will stop them from coming, and sounds like there are thousands more on their way.
  •
    And there's a super interesting connection with Chile. . . .

'I've Become a Racist': Migrant Wave Unleashes Danish Tensions Over Identity - The New ... - 1 views

In Denmark the new wave of immigrants has shown an underlying societal racism. Danes feel that their culture is being stripped away by the immigrants. While they have come to terms with being a multiethnical society, they do not want to be a multicultural one.

Charlie Hebdo Mocks Europe's Response to Migrant Crisis With Cartoons of Dead Syrian Boy - 3 views

  •
French illustrators have been denounced on social networks in recent days for publishing editorial cartoons inspired by photographs of Aylan Kurdi, a 3-year-old Syrian boy whose drowning in the waters off Greece this month prompted an outpouring of sympathy for refugees. France has had a history of xenophobia and this cultural undercurrent is clearly expressed in the cartoons. Interesting to analyze whether the cartoons are xenophobic themselves or pointing to the xenophobia of the government.
  •
Oy. I wish Charlie Hebdo exercised a little sensitivity sometimes.

France's Sarkozy says borderers Europe untenable in migrant crisis - 0 views

  •
Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy called on Thursday for the suspension of the Schengen accord that lets people travel without passport checks between 26 European countries, saying the continent's migration crisis had made it unworkable. France also wants to establish a law that makes the goal of the asylum to ultimately result in sending the refugees back to their country once the threat is terminated.
