I worked with Julie Curio a few years ago for MA New Literacies. I think it is so important to start teaching students these new skill to comprehend text and to efficiently search a topic. However, I teach graduate level courses and I do these exercises with teachers and many (regardless of age) do not know these strategies. States need to do more PD to bring administrators and teachers up to par so we can make sure our students are ready for whatever comes their way. Thanks, ~Katy

The thing that worries most non-specialists teaching language is pronouncing words correctly from a book. This is where Forvo is is priceless. Native speaker users and the site itself have uploaded audio clips of word for us non native speakers to copy. The site has 250+ languages uploaded. Let's face it: Texting is here to stay. The average 13- to 17-year-old sends 2,900 texts a month, according to the market research firm Nielsen. And while it might be a punishable offense in most schools, some teachers say that texting has educational tie-ins and that it can teach positive language skills, the Charlotte Observer in North Carolina reports.
