  • Although the Colab was created specifically to teach social media theory by the use of social media, and the Social Media Classroom includes resource lists, syllabi, and , lesson plans focused on that specific subject, it was intended from the beginning to serve as an all-purpose tool for educators who seek to use social media in pursuit of a more participative pedagogy. That’s where the community of practice comes in. We’re devoting an instance of the Colab to converations among educational practitioners that we hope to grow into a self-sustaining community around the use of social software in pedagogy in the broadest sense—any subject, any age level, any institution. We welcome participants who want to learn more, share best practices, meet others who share an interest in social media in education. The hope of those who created the initial Colab and accompanying curricular and support material is that this effort, and the tools we provide, will inspire others to vastly expand and deepen our resource repository, add their syllabi and lesson plans, discuss with and learn from others. We’ll start with Forums, where the early participants can meet and discuss what we’d like to do together, and the wiki, where we’ve seeded some fundamental resources and invite others to add new ones. If there is interest, we can add blogs, chat, RSS, social bookmarking, microblogging and video. The Colab is based on Drupal, a free and open source Content Management System, and we hope to grow ties with others in that community who are interested in working with educators to co-develop new tools and improve existing ones. On my blog, mostly geared towards educational thoughts, reflections, and motivations, I am showing examples of mixing various web2.0 tools together. During the summer, I have a form that the reader can complete on summer reading interests. Each Monday, I hope to post a summary of what those participating have shared from around the world. And then, of course comments are welcomed. Thus, this is a real connecting use of the Internet, offering lots of participation and engaging thoughts!

K-12 Online reflections ? Moving at the Speed of Creativity - 0 views

  •
K-12 Online was a fundamentally different conference experience for presenters, participants, and conveners because the format challenged everyone to maximize the learning opportunities of blended instruction. As learners who grew up in the twentieth century, most teachers today (and everyone who participated in K-12 Online this year) are most familiar with face-to-face (synchronous) learning formats. Online, blended learning environments which involve both asynchronous and synchronous interactions between novice and expert learners can offer much richer opportunities for interaction and learning. This was the case with K-12 Online 2006.

Web 2.0 in the Classroom: Online Conferences - Awesome, Convenient Professional Develop... - 0 views

  •
Time and money often prevent educators from attending as many conferences as they want, but Web 2.0 is really changing this. Many conferences today have some aspect of online participation either in real-time or via archived sessions. One really great directory to check out is the 2009 T.H.E. Conference Calendar. Set up your search according to month and geographical location. Clicking on a particular conference will give you details such as when and where, a conference description, who should attend, website location/reference and contact information. While not all of these will have a virtual participation component, it certainly is the trend.

Beyond Current Horizons : Reworking the web, reworking the world: how web 2.0 is changi... - 24 views

Article by Justin Reich of Harvard Graduate School of Education and EdTechTeacher. Reich on Web 2.0: "There is no doubt that this democratization, these contributions from many millions of web participants, has produced a series of profound social, political and economic changes that this paper will seek to document. The changes inspired by the democratization of the web, however, will not of necessity lead to a more equitable distribution of power and resources in our society. The future of the web will depend upon the degree to which this blossoming of online participation will allow ordinary citizens and consumers to have greater voice and influence in shaping society and the degree to which powerful political and commercial interests can co-opt and constrain the surge of online enthusiasm in the support of the established hierarchy. • purposeful social engagement
  • If we regard social media as a pit of narcissism it’s because of the behaviours we’re encouraging within these spaces – not the technologies.
    • Steve Ransom

Yes... we need to lead kids in the notion that they can be more than "I"... that they can be part of and participate in virtual (and physical) communities that can empower them and give them meaningful voice.
  • Are we consumers of each other’s social, cultural or material status or are we participants and contributors in larger projects that benefits us all?
    • Steve Ransom

Being a consumer does have its benefits, but the larger benefits are most certainly found when one contributes and participates with new levels of transparency.

Think Social Media Guidelines - 48 views

  •
"As school districts explore the use of social computing throughout the school day and as an approach to extend instruction; many educators are making the decision to create a wiki, publish video online, or to participate in blogging, social networking or virtual worlds. Social media guidelines encourage educators to participate in social computing and strive to create an atmosphere of trust and individual accountability. Teachers who must hide their online activity because of nonexistent social media guidelines risk losing their jobs and reputations. A better approach is to collaboratively develop a policy that is acceptable to administrators, school board members, teachers and parents allowing for involvement in the global conversation in which many are contributing."

eFieldTrips.org - 48 views

  •
eFieldTrips consist of four major components:1. Trip Journal   First, the teacher downloads and gives students copy of a printed Trip Journal. It is a simple one page fill-in the blank type worksheet that helps to keep the students focused and provides a way for the teacher to grade student participation if he desires. The students fill-out the Trip Journal while they are completing the next component, the Virtual Visit.2. Virtual Visit   The Virtual Visit is an interactive Flash movie that teaches the students about the eFieldTrip topic. It can be completed at anytime and at the student's own pace. It typically takes about 15 minutes for a student to go through the Virtual Visit.3. Ask the Experts   After completing the Virtual Visit, students have an opportunity to interact with the experts. Students can ask questions via an "Ask the Experts" web form, and recieve an answer in 1-2 days.4. Live Chat   Another way students can interact with experts is by participating in a live web chat at a scheduled time.
