Stephen Ritz - Extraordinary People Changing the Game - 0 views

  •
Stephen Ritz is a dynamic inspiration for kids in the Bronx who used to believe there was no more hope for them. His enthusiasm is undoubtedly contagious, enabling troubled teenagers to secure a source of living with the use of the knowledge he equipped them with in and out of school. Besides restoring hope, Stephen helped the malnourished community reclaim their health by growing local produce right in his very classrooms. His non-profit organization called Green Bronx Machine harvested produce enough to feed 450 people. Now that's what you call serving the community in the truest sense of the word. To read more about Stephen Ritz visit www.thextraordinary.org.

  • Although the Colab was created specifically to teach social media theory by the use of social media, and the Social Media Classroom includes resource lists, syllabi, and , lesson plans focused on that specific subject, it was intended from the beginning to serve as an all-purpose tool for educators who seek to use social media in pursuit of a more participative pedagogy. That’s where the community of practice comes in. We’re devoting an instance of the Colab to converations among educational practitioners that we hope to grow into a self-sustaining community around the use of social software in pedagogy in the broadest sense—any subject, any age level, any institution. We welcome participants who want to learn more, share best practices, meet others who share an interest in social media in education. The hope of those who created the initial Colab and accompanying curricular and support material is that this effort, and the tools we provide, will inspire others to vastly expand and deepen our resource repository, add their syllabi and lesson plans, discuss with and learn from others. We’ll start with Forums, where the early participants can meet and discuss what we’d like to do together, and the wiki, where we’ve seeded some fundamental resources and invite others to add new ones. If there is interest, we can add blogs, chat, RSS, social bookmarking, microblogging and video. The Colab is based on Drupal, a free and open source Content Management System, and we hope to grow ties with others in that community who are interested in working with educators to co-develop new tools and improve existing ones. Technologically Externalized Knowledge and Learning « Connectivism - 15 views

Reformers have largely worked within, rather than on, the system of education. Working within the system has resulted in status-quo preservation, even when reformists felt they were being radical. Illich failed to account for how educational institutions are integrated into society. Freire spoke with a humanity and hope that was largely overlooked by a comfortable developed world incapable of seeing the structure and impact of its system. To create and nurture change, a message must not only be true for an era, but it must also resonate with the needs, passions, interests, realities, and hopes of the audience to whom the message is directed.

From Good to Great: Writing well by Thinking like Authors - The Learner's Way - 5 views

  •
A common challenge for students and teachers is how to develop a great idea for a piece of writing. Too often students struggle with the process of finding inspiration for their writing. They have a vague idea for the story they hope to tell, but all too quickly it transforms into a list of events with little or no detail. The goal here is to provide our students with a process to use during the planning process. The hope is that by identifying the type of thinking required during the early phases of ideation and to focus their attention on details, that the stories our students subsequently compose will be more enjoyable to read. Hopefully, this process helps.

Remove Google Bad Reviews Introduction As a small business owner, you probably want to make sure everyone is happy with your business. But what if someone posts a negative review on Google? Do you have any control over whether or not it stays up? And even if you could remove a bad review from Google, how would that be possible? If a customer post a negative comment about one of your products or services on Google, then how do you respond? Is there anything that can be done about this problem? In this article we'll discuss everything about deleting bad reviews from google play store and other platforms like Facebook, Yelp and Yelp! How do you respond to a negative comment? When you receive a negative comment, it's easy to get defensive and react with a harsh reply. But this only makes the issue worse. Instead of responding with a stern "no," try responding with something positive: "Thanks for your feedback! I'll take it under consideration." Or: "Thanks for your feedback-I'm happy to discuss if there's anything else I can do." You might even try an apology: "I'm sorry that this didn't turn out as we'd hoped." Remove Google Bad Reviews These responses are much more likely to create goodwill than being sarcastic or dismissive (which won't win any friends). How do you Remove a bad review on Google? You can't Remove a bad review on Google. You can remove a bad review from Google with three different methods: Contacting the reviewer, who may be willing to remove the review if you ask them politely enough (this is not recommended). Contacting Google directly and asking them to take down your listing (this is also not recommended). Contacting the site owner, who may be willing to remove your listing if they want it gone but aren't able to do so directly through their own system (you could also try contacting them via Twitter or Facebook). Bringing the world to innovation - MIT News Office - 0 views

  • Awareness of D-Lab has grown in recent years, thanks in part to some prominent mentions: a popular TED talk Smith gave in 2006 and Time magazine’s selection of her in 2010 as one of the world’s 100 most influential people.

  • The program now employs about 20 people and encompasses 16 courses that reach about 400 students each year. Even though D-Lab does little to publicize its activities, staffers are increasingly hearing that this program was a major reason why participating students chose to attend MIT.
  • thanks to a major new U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) grant to D-Lab and MIT’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning, D-Lab’s instructors and researchers will implement this strategy even more broadly — providing greater continuity to projects around the world, says D-Lab founder Amy Smith, a senior lecturer in MIT’s Department of Mechanical Engineering.
  • with the new USAID support, “we can harness the alumni of IDDS as a kind of an extremely diverse and dispersed design consultancy,”
  • While some students have already managed to turn class projects into ongoing organizations — building better water filters in Africa, bicycle-powered washing machines in Latin America, and wheelchairs in India, for instance — the new funding should enable more such activities, Smith says, by “incubating ventures and training entrepreneurs.”
  • The emphasis has shifted,” Grau Serrat says, “more from designing for poor people to designing with poor people, or even design by poor people.”
  •
Another reason some students are applying to MIT. Undergrads are making a difference globally. "the innovative MIT classes and field trips known collectively as D-Lab, the project aimed to develop creative solutions to problems facing people in the world's least-affluent countries - and then hoped those residents would embrace the solutions." "The program now employs about 20 people and encompasses 16 courses that reach about 400 students each year. Even though D-Lab does little to publicize its activities, staffers are increasingly hearing that this program was a major reason why participating students chose to attend MIT." "All of D-Lab's classes assess the needs of people in less-privileged communities around the world, examining innovations in technology, education or communications that might address those needs. The classes then seek ways to spread word of these solutions - and in some cases, to spur the creation of organizations to help disseminate them. Specific projects have focused on improved wheelchairs and prosthetics; water and sanitation systems; and recycling waste to produce useful products, including charcoal fuel made from agricultural waste."

Global Classroom Project - 0 views

  •
The Global Classroom was born in the minds of Deb Frazier's (@Deb_Frazier) young students in March 2011: "Our first grade class [in Ohio, USA] was thinking about the ways people around the world meet their needs. We began to do some research, diving into books about various cultures. While sharing new learning about India, Puju, whose family is from India, commented "My dad says that's not really true." From there we knew we needed more than books ... We needed to talk with people in other cultures to really discover the many ways in which they meet their needs." Global Classroom 2012-13 is an exciting opportunity for you to make a positive difference - in your classroom, community, and around the world. We hope you will join us on this journey, and help us realise the full potential of this amazing learning community. We will officially launch in late October 2012, and run through to the end of the Northem Hemisphere school year in June 2013. Over that time, we will be hosting a wide range of global projects, and providing opportunities for new and experienced teachers alike to explore new ways to learn, share, connect, and collaborate worldwide. Working together, we can make this dream a reality.

Hold your ideas lightly - The Learner's Way - 17 views

  •
The history of teaching is littered with ideas that have come and gone. In their day each was the new bright hope, set to transform what we do as teachers and how our students learn. Each new idea had its supporters and detractors and each in turn was replaced by an alternative or simply disappeared from view. Those who have experienced this ebb and flow of ideas have learned to approach the shiny and the new with caution and yet we have all encountered ideas that are so compelling it is difficult to ignore. How might we approach new ideas and innovative practices in ways that ensure our students benefit?

The purpose of education - The Learner's Way - 16 views

  •
Behind the rhetoric and politics, education is about the outcomes it achieves for its learners. More than being about the nuances of technology, learning space design, curriculum structures and pedagogical practices schools should have effective answers to questions that focus on what they hope to achieve for their learners. How we answer this question should then dictate the measures we utilise to achieve these goals and it is to these ends that we must apply our efforts.
