Pastors Kerry and Chris Shook, founders of Woodlands Church in Houston encourage their congregation to "live the scripture." This ties in with our readings this week about action, community, and connection. They believe that more and more, people do not want to just sit and listen to a sermon, they want to live the sermon and spread the word and action to others.

The percentage. of people who call themselves in some way Christian has dropped more than 11% in a generation. The faithful have scattered out of their traditional bases: The Bible Belt is less Baptist.
I found it interesting that many religious groups are fading as time goes on. People are less likely to pinpoint a certain religious group that they are affiliated with. I know the Catholic Community took a bit hit in members being proud to say they are catholic when many altar boys were molested by some of their priests.

Charities have to be careful when they lobby for something that they believe in or want. However, they have to be careful not to lobby and cross the lines on how they lobby. Their status as non-profit could be jeopardized if they are not careful.
I decided to use my Legislating Change assignment as my resource contribution. I feel that the amount they are asking for is too high, considering many other important funding that has been cut and will continue to be cut. I also feel that the reasons they gave for wanting a raise are an insult to residents who are making do with far less.
MIRA, The Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition is the largest organization in New England promoting the rights and integration of immigrants and refugees.
With the severe economic downturn happening in Detroit, I found this organization very interesting. It reminded me of the collaboration between the shipyard and the surrounding community of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Instead of being a week-long showcase, Bridging Communities is ongoing and works to improve the lives of the elderly in Southwest Detroit.
Taking on many forms, civic engagement at SMFA permeates faculty curriculum, student initiatives and additional programming.
MFA have incorporated art and civic engagement together. They have connected art to important social values in communities that are important to them. They hope that a program like this will gain support and have participants become active in the community. The hopes of a program like this are changing the world in a positive way.
The UMB school is hosting this in Boston Common and looks to be very interesting with speakers on youth and community.
In celebration of its 50th anniversary, UMass Boston will briefly return to its downtown roots and take over the Boston Common on October 7. Chancellor J. Keith Motley will kick off the Campus on the Common morning program by leading a procession from the State House to the Boston Common for a Celebration50 ceremony that will include a special music program and remarks by key dignitaries, including Dr. Victoria Reggie Kennedy. The afternoon's events, which include tent talks, an academic showcase, and musical entertainment, are free and open to the public.

HARTFORD - The planning and zoning commission voted Tuesday to give an unfavorable recommendation to the city's plan to build a minor league baseball stadium, and sharply criticized the process by which officials have proceeded with the proposal. The commission voted 4-2 to send an adverse recommendation to the city council, which is considering the project.
