Polyhedral Greek Alphabet Oracle - The Journey - 9 views

  •
A number of polyhedra made in various materials are known from the Roman world. They may have been used in conjunction with with an oracle inscribed on a pillar set up in a public place. The polyhedron was thrown in order to choose a letter at random. One consulted the inscription to find the matching letter and read the oracle's response. There would be twenty oracular messages, each beginning with a letter of the alphabet that corresponds to one side of the dice.

The material is broadly divided into three categories: building inscriptions, altars, and tombstones. The material is ordered according to difficulty and the seminar ends with the discussion of some problematic case-studies from each category.

  •
The chariot race from BEN-HUR: A TALE OF THE CHRIST (1925), remains one of the most riveting pieces of cinema ever produced - so much so that it was used as a blueprint for the now better known one in the 1959 version. The 1925 version was first reissued to theaters in 1931 with a synchronized music and effects track - as can be heard in this excerpt. (fair use for educational and informational study)

Greek Heroes in Popular Culture Through Time - OpenLearn - Open University - 6 views

  •
What does '2001: a Space Odyssey' have to do with Odysseus? How does Brad Pitt's Achilles in 'Troy' match up to Homer's original hero? And is Arnold Schwarzenegger the new Heracles? This collection of video animations and audio discussions examines how the heroes of Greek mythology have been represented in popular culture, from ancient times to the modern day. Odysseus is the archetypal questing hero - a blank canvas on which every era has projected its own values. Heracles is the original strongman. And Achilles is the fighter whose sexuality vies with his heel for popular attention. The videos mix archive film and TV clips with character animation, bringing a playful approach to classical myth, while the audio discussions shine a more scholarly light on how today's popular culture sees these myths differently from the Ancient Greeks.

The Odyssey on Map Tales - 4 views

  •
The Odyssey is an ancient Greek epic poem attributed to Homer. It centres on the Greek hero Odysseus and his long journey home after the fall of Troy. It takes Odysseus ten years to return from Troy to his home island of Ithaca. This map tale describes Odysseus's epic voyage and the many foes he meets upon the way. Scholars, both ancient and modern, are divided as to whether or not any of the places visited by Odysseus are real, even so the locations shown in this tale give a good sense of Odysseus's journey around the Peloponnese and the Ionian Islands.
