Una nueva herramienta online desarrollada por un equipo de historiadores y especialistas en tecnología de la información de la Universidad de Stanford muestra cuán largo y costoso era enviar a la gente y el trigo entre las ciudades del Imperio Romano. Se trata de ORBIS, "el Google Maps del mundo antiguo", como es presentada en la web. Una aplicación que muestra las rutas posibles entre ciudades antiguas sobre la base de las condiciones de hace 2.000 años. Un mapa puede mostrar la distancia entre dos ciudades, pero en un mundo de barcos de vela y carros tirados por burros el camino más corto no era el que necesariamente usaría la gente. Para informar de los cálculos, el equipo de ORBIS ha hecho uso de mapas y documentos antiguos, de mediciones meteorológicas de hoy en día y de los experimentos de los historiadores al tratar de navegar en barcos de estilo romano. ORBIS puede ayudar a los historiadores a calcular el tiempo y el coste del tráfico de personas y mercancías durante el Imperio Romano. It aims to promote and conduct research on the interaction of cultures, using verbal and visual materials. It specializes in the influence of ancient Mediterranean traditions on European culture from the Middle Ages to the modern period. Its open-access library has outstanding strengths in Byzantine, Medieval and Renaissance art, Arabic, Medieval and Renaissance philosophy, the history of religion, science and magic, Italian history, the history of the classical tradition, and humanism. In several of these fields it can claim to be the most important library in the world. The photographic collection, organised by subject, documents the iconographical traditions of western art and facilitates research into these traditions as well as the identification of the subject of individual images. The archive holds the papers of Aby Warburg, Fritz Saxl and other staff members of the Institute, including both sides of their correspondence with many leading scholars of the twentieth century.
